Here's a link to a video showing Materazzi (the headbuttee) doing what he does best. The effective and deliberate use of the elbow to crush the opponent's face is, well, innovative. Kinda gives you a hint as to what kind of guy makes a team captain snap in extra time in the World Cup final.

Regardless of what you think about Zidane, you've got to admit that was a fantastic headbutt. Then again, it makes me wonder how one can do something like that without impairing his own mental function via a tremendous concussion. this debate on Zidane's winning header is awesome -- Zidane made soccer look like wrestling, or American football, and it finally found an American audience. maybe that's his true legacy, making soccer more friendly to US audiences still baffled by offsides and such (no offside in NASCAR, for fuck's sake). interestingly, the Guardian has already retracted -- in print -- their lame web item from last night about the alleged racist slur, "But amid the whirlpool of rumour and counter-rumour surrounding the incident there was no suggestion it was due to a racist comment". ie, God bless them, they readily admit they make shit up -- you don't retract a story like that after just a few hours if you have a shred of evidence to support your initial claim the Daily Mail story is even more hilarious, I love the alleged "expert, who can lip read foreign languages phonetically and translate with the aid of an Italian interpreter". a Brazilian TV station hired another alleged lip-reader (mind-reader?) who said Materazzi had something to say about Zidane's sister instead. unless Zidane or Materazzi enlighten us, and they aren't really talking (they're both right, keeping the story alive makes the both of them look bad) I guess this will be very difficult to figure out -- in the footage you see Materazzi in profile, and you'd need a really tight close up to manage to read his lips, if it's at all possible to read lips without seeing the mouth, basically. it certainly didn't work for me on a 42-inch plasma screen, but then I don't read minds -- the Daily Mail will never consult me, I guess. as I said, go on, this is truly fun to read, between a celebration and another here -- the shameless, hypocritical attempts to try to justify a savage head blow by a world superstar (with a bad track record when it comes to body blows). one assumes the Saudi who got stomped by Zidane in '98 was guilty of racial abuse, too (actually, as a Berber, I guess Zidane is technically whiter than a Saudi Arab, but who cares really). see, the bottom line here is that in soccer, trash talk is not a foul, and a head butt is. until they change the rules, of course. maybe they'll do just that, in time for the next world cup -- Zidane should come back from retirement, then. anyway this debate is fun, but not as fun as seeing the French celebrate at the Elysée this morning -- with the cup mysteriously missing. maybe Zidane had beaten the crap out the cup, too, who knows

Numerous announcers reported that the scene was on the jumbotron (though the bbc claims otherwise) and both coaches as well at the press conference. Fifa's statement on the matter doesn't actually deny it. They just say that the ref saw it, he didn't see it on replay and that he called it in on his headset. That card approximately five minutes to issue. If they didn't see it live, he totally didn't earn it. And if the stadium showed it then they went against FIFA rules (showing controversial plays on screen in stadium). Also combined with the German midfielder getting carded the night before their match (after days to review it) and just coming out of a match-fixing scandal, it paints me mighty paranoid.

I can sympathize with Zidane's emotions if the other guy really said something about his mother on the same day she went into the hospital, but he still has to control his actions. but not as fun as seeing the French celebrate at the Elysée this morning -- with the cup mysteriously missing. The only thing funnier is watching the Italians celebrate such a lame victory. It was an ugly game with a boring ending. I'm really baffled at how happy everyone is. At least we can finally put the 'beautiful game' cliche to rest. Bah. I can see why the Germans are happy, though. At least the third place game was a good one.

When I saw that I decried Zidane's headbutt in much the same way as Decani. He shouldn't have done it (still, Materazzi is a wanker) but once one makes the decision to headbutt someone then one should just fucking go for it, in my humble opinion; a 'faux Glasgas kiss' never impressed anybody.

I'm sorry but you know what? Saying that violence is never justified is just weak. (It's actually much worse then that, but I don't feel like engaging in name calling.) It must be great to be so mature that you will allow any comment, no matter how completely out of line, go unchallenged. I suppose that you would stand there at your wedding and allow some jack-ass to stand up and insult your bride (or husband). At your mother's funeral? At your child's first school play? There are times when hitting someone so hard that they fall down and choose to stay on the ground rather than get up and challenge you again is exactly the right thing to do. Not often, the rarer the better, but there are times when violence is in fact called for.
