I just finished reading this from the post below, and I did find it pretty relevant and interesting, but that post sort of had its own thing going on, and I really didn't feel like anyone wanted to talk about a nine-part series on drug addiction.

It was a worthwhile read for me, since the first bits of it parallel a lot of actions I've seen taken on the part of some of my friends, and to see not only how drawn out the recovery process was, along with the present outcome, was intense.

You could declare a moratorium on reading them & posting in them, if it bothers you that much. It's not like there's been thousands of them or something.

On the actual topic of the FPP, it will take me a while to read it, so I won't be able to actually comment on the link until later. (Ever noticed that the discussions get a lot better further down the thread? I wondered about Mewes' reaction to this, myself... but it's actually a pretty compassionate, unflinching look at a bleak life, once you get past the author. And ultimately heroic, I suppose, if ones can overlook the Nicole Richie angle.

But I would imagine that Smith probably ran this by Mewes first. He's been in the business too long to think he can ambush his friends without consequence.

I read this last night from the comment in the previous thread. It's a great story. I was moved.

still in part one, but how do you suppose Mewes feels about all these private details being public aired by his buddy?

from reading the entire story, I get the idea that Smith and Mewes are pretty close, and something like this doesn't go public without a lot of talking about it between friends. heck, Smith mentions in the story a couple of times how much he and Jason walk and talk and talk and walk and sit and talk, etc. they're the best of friends, and they've both been through a lot.

Smith has hinted at Mewes' drug problems in the past. In the commentary for, uh, maybe Chasing Amy Smith wonders if Jason is narcoleptic. Ben Affleck chimes in with, "That's not narcolepsy." on An Evening With Kevin Smith they skirt the issue while answering a straightforward question from the audience about Mewes' and heroin. I just watched it again today after reading the article, and the background from the story gave that particular bit a whole new spin.

in fact, a lot of these stories that Smith tells (via commentaries, college Q&As, the press, etc.) are well-scripted and planned out ahead. he calls them 'bits.' I recognize a few of them word-for-word in this story from various movie commentaries and AEWKS. his ability to deftly field questions and criticisms with wit and panache is apparent in AEWKS, and I get the idea that he's prepared like he is because he's very involved with his fanbase. which is kinda cool.

anyway, it's a great story of friendship, addiction, and how life can be hard (even for those on the silver screen) and it's worth a read. it fills in a lot of questions from AEWKS, too, if you've seen that and were wondering.

carsonb, excellent, write in such a manner as to irritate your audience! Its a great way to get fans! It doesn't rankle me hide, it makes me close the window on his site.

When people want to make a point about a love being platonic they usually say something like "love him like a brother" instead of hetero love. But it just goes to his overall pretension that all things Kevin Smith are wittier and cleverer and funnier than ordinary mortals could possibly understand. That shit gets old in about a paragraph.

I am not a hater or a fanboy of Kevin Smith's, but the first movie I saw of his was Dogma, and I was floored by Jason Mewes. See, I had a friend in undergrad who was exactly like Jay (which, from reading the long story, turns out to be just Jason as himself) -- physically, they could have been brothers, in terms of psychology and humor, they were identical twins. Although M, as far as I know, never became a junkie, he had a number of dark years in deep depression.

posted by SuzySmith at 7:30 PM on July 20, 2006

This certainly seems to mostly be about a couple of close friends, one who happens to be a filmmaker and the other a drug addict. The filmmaker just happened to actually want to help his drug addicted friend, and thankfully the friend was ultimately willing to get some help.

I think the snarking against may indicate that we have lots of readers and maybe even some writers for Overrated. (Which from what I can tell is, well, overrated. But I think snarking is overrated, so... I'm probably not the best to judge. Oh, and I'm old.)

The critics of this post have either not read it in its entirety, or lead perfect lives with perfect friends and perfect families.

I've seen all of Mr. Smith's films except Strikes Back and have enjoyed them, but have not found them exceptional. This story, on the other hand, may be his best work. Not for what he has done, as he admits it was little, if at all productive, but for why he continues to do it. This is a story about how to be a friend, and how to create a family. From that we might learn. Quite a bit. Snootch.

The most on point thing in the entire story is the admission clerk that ask why ks made his retarded friend a stoner /dealer in his movies if he was trying to cure his drug problem. You can tell he got off on his friend's destructive behavior, and feed it from the beginning. He is much gayer than most openly gays and a lot less funny and clever than he thinks he is. Yeah, it's interesting, but it needs some heavy editing, which is to say it suffers from a fault common to nearly all blog posts (my own included).

Smith seems to commit himself so totally to his friends that he cannot view them with any objectivity. Not only can he not stand to see them criticized, but he embarrasses himself and them with gushing praise and a tendency to croon over even the most commonplace of actions.

For example: I didn't need a paragraph to explain the origin of 'snootchie bootchies'. This guy fusses over Mewes' least idiosyncracies like a new mother over her first child's nappies.

But for all that, I'm happy Mewes made it.

Also, for some reason, in my head this tale was narrated in the voice of Jay Peterman from Seinfeld.

That might have been a great story. Unfortunately, it was so poorly written that I was unable to bring myself to complete the first instalment.

Annoying typos / outright mistakes:
Roughly one square mile in length . . .
purchased in the late ‘60’s . . .

Redundancy / Stating the obvious:
Mewes, my junior by four years and Walt and Bry’s junior by six, was still a high school student at this point – something my compatriots and I hadn’t been in years.

Awkward sentence construction:
My conversations were invariably directed at Bry and Walt, while Mewes listened in, ever sporting a puzzled look at the topic of conversation until he saw the opportunity to offer up some sort of outlandish what-if scenario that featured him fucking something or someone inappropriate nearby, topping it all off with a resounding “NEH!”. . .

Later, we’d learn he didn’t make it into paradise before going off like a broken hydrant against her hip.

"Somebody get that man an editor"

Just as I've always said - All blogs should be required to hire an editor.

I mean come on! Don't these people know that one of the main criteria for a blog post is proper spelling and grammar? Not to mention professional writing style. Don't they realize? - Even though the audience is virtual friends and family, that doesn't mean they can ease up on the formal riles of literary composition. You might think that your blog is your personal space, but you would be wrong. It's literature.

At the end of the day a blog post will be held to the same standards as a news article or column. People who just have amusing or heartfelt stories to share with the world need to take this medium much more seriously. Otherwise those of us who are complete strangers (or even bitter critics) will have to call you on your lack of writing/editing skil

"don't fuck the vapid"

In my little world we use the term "Don't stick it in the crazy", since there are sometimes that small children are around and we don't wish to have them repeating what they heard from their parents dirty-minded crazy friends at preschool. Yet.

Count me as one of those enraptured by this whole story. Read the whole thing yesterday when it was posted in the other thread. I have to hand it to Silent Bob. He has not grown too, too distant from his roots, and his upbringing and the care his parents instilled in him shines through. The same can be said for Jay. And yes, I will always refer to them as Jay and Silent Bob, for that was how I was introduced to them. Fuck you, media.

I also liked the alternate ending to Clerks. Though I don't think most people would understand why.

While I am not a fanatic for Kevin Smith, I do like his down to earth "I'm from the suburbs, and the suburbs sucked the life from me" story telling. I also like how he manages to bring about the sense of "yeah, the burbs sucked, but they're not really so bad, so I should get over myself". But maybe that's just me.

And this is all I have to say to anyone who posts anything about Kevin Smith on the intarweb;
"All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball-lickers. We're gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little bitches. Once we get to Hollywood and find those Miramax fucks who are making that movie, we're gonna make 'em eat our shit, then shit out our shit, then eat their shit which is made up of our shit that we made 'em eat. Then you're all you motherfucks are next. Love, Jay and Silent Bob."

romakimmy: unfortunately, that's the nature of loanwords. you can decry this all you want, but at the end of the day English-speakers are still going to use "panini" as both singular and plural, just as they say "bratwursts" instead of "bratwürste." things like this bother me too, but if you go with the original etymology people are just going to label you pretentious and not listen any more.

fenriq writes "Mitheral, so Kevin Smith IS your God?"

Well maybe a demigod, I'm not into that monothist world view.

daq writes "In my little world we use the term 'Don't stick it in the crazy'"

We have the phrase "don't fall into the crazy" IE: It's OK to stick it in the crazy as long as you don't start thinking like the crazy. Or even worse be so overwhelmed you start thinking you can save the crazy. The latter seems to affect women more than men.

daq writes "And this is all I have to say to anyone who posts anything about Kevin Smith on the intarweb"

I'm guessing I'm not the only who pictures the moviepoopshoot forums when he stumbles into a particularly juvenile portion of the net.

if any kevin smith-haters are interested in jason mewes' story, you can also check out the wikipedia entry for jason which is an abbreviated version of the blog posts linked with a few bits paraphrased rather than just copied verbatim. that way you could get the story without having to read kevin smith's blog.

JFC, wah wah, I don't like Kevin Smith because he writes like a self important jerk, but I sure like to complain about it. Specifically I like to write out my complaints. Like a jerk. Like a self important one.

OMG I have seen the enemy and he is me!

I call B.S. He claims Mewes worked the rollerball on his Rec Center's Asteroids machine as though he were performing cunnilingus on it, but Asteroids has no rollerball, only a bunch of buttons!

holy christ, not again.

can we declare a moratorium on Hat Maui posts for, like, ever?

I've never understood why people who don't like a topic/person/whatever need to come into the comments and bitch about it. It's clearly marked, Just don't read it. I was sick of the World Cup after day one -- I just ignored everything related to it. I've been sick of Paris Hilton for years -- I just don't read stories about her. Real simple.

Maybe it was the sequel Blasteroids. The controls aren't rollerballs, but they look like they would work.

Kevin says he fell in love with his muse, when he saw him sucking off the furniture, or maybe Muse realized this is how he could get Kevin to like him---either way he’s been sucking Kevin’s dick figurative or literally ever since. What seems to have really pissed Kevin off is when Muse became more dependent on drugs than on him. Kevin obviously realized Muse was the best thing he had going for his movies and helped keep him addicted in a classical co-dependent way. But all end wells, the Muse is back living with Kevin, and being his little subservient bitch (or as Kevin calls it his boy). Will he ever break free of Kevin? Not today, probably not tomorrow.

It's a rather good story, actually, if you make it through the whole thing. Then again, I have a crush on Jay anyway.
