But just once it would be nice as if announcements like this weren't given the three-ring-circus treatment, where the entertainer is redefined in a publicity stunt much like a ritual rebirth, as not just a person who entertains, but a gay person who does it. As if it should surprise us that out there on our tv or on the radio there are people who look just like normal people...but they're gay. Well hrm, Ian McKellen has managed to avoid being typecast. Nathan Lane has been typecast, but certainly the characters of Max Biallystock, and Nathan Detroit must count for something. In regards to gay actors wanting to avoid playing straight characters. That actually sounds fairly ludicrous. Ben Affleck, too. No. He's straight. But Matthew McConaughey is gay. I'd say that is a MUCH bigger win for that team. And people do care. Because there is a TON of money involved. The average movie/concert ticket purchasing 14 year old girl —THE market for male stars— cares. She cares that her fav star is straight or not —not because she is bigoted— but because it's part of the adolescent fantasy of having him as your future husband. Not the guy who goes shoe shopping with you. The guy who sweeps you off your feet. It's not about the character he plays. It's all the fantasy. If he marries he just as "out" as if he is gay. Action stars... yeah. It matters. And that IS bigoted. Kind of. What with popular cliches involving what IS masculine, etc. OT: I used chuckle to myself when some of my training partners make broad pronouncements about homosexuals and how NOT tough they are, etc. I didn't have the heart (or the right) to tell them that one of the biggest, toughest, fighters in the Gym is 100% Gay McGayerson from Gayville. He usually makes his point in the ring with the homophobes. I always wanna say "Look. Dudes. What kind of guy is going to like rolling around on the mat and in the ring with half naked men more? Who is more likely to get GOOD at it? Your average straight guy? Or a gay guy?" Anyway. It's different with male movie fans who find out a the chick star they like is a lesbian. Hell. That UPS the ante.
