Anyone remember the days when people just did their damned jobs, picked up their pay and didn't expect a pat on the back from everyone else for it? God, I miss those days.

Can we have a "Grumbling Curmudgeon" day too, please? I just won't feel properly appreciated until that happens.

I'm a sysadmin for a small company. Although my coworkers know about this day, they've pretty much decided it's a joke and shouldn't even result in a thank-you email.

Yay for me.

I actually more-or-less agree with Decani, at least about the "special day" thing. That said, I am still shocked when comparing notes with friends in the field at how un-seriously many companies take thier IT depts, budget-wise, keeping-in-the-loop-wise, etc.

Another small company sysadmin here.

The president recognized SysAdmin day by screwing up the email configuration of the new salesguy's laptop - just before the salesguy flew many states away. Giving me the joy of walking a computer novice through the fix over the phone. Otherwise I'd get lonely with nothing but the machines to talk to...

I don't feel like thanking the sysadmins at DreamHost today.

There has apparently been another power outage at the datacenter. One of the generators caught fire and they were taken offline.

Okay, maybe if one of them personally put the fire out.

Wendell, the sysadmins had NO CONTROL OVER THAT WHATSOVER.

That's building operations, and they work for a different company than Dreamhost.

They did very likely have to work in an unairconditioned room that hit upwards of 120 degrees. If anything they deserve EXTRA thanks this week.

I'm a developer, not an admin. But I sure appreciate what those guys do to keep the machines that run my code running.

It's a thursday, and I'm in a good mood. It's payday. I think I'll take some calls. I put the phone back on the hook. It rings.
"I've been trying to get you for hours!" the voice at the other end screams
"Not, it can't be hours" I say, putting "Blade Runner" back into it's cover and looking at the back, "it was more like 114 minutes. I was on a long phone call with the big boss, trying to get you users some better facilities"
Hook; Line; and Sinker...
"Oh. I'm sorry."
"That's ok, I'm a tolerant person" I make a mental note to change his password to something nasty in the next couple of days.

I remember when one got a fat paycheck for sysadmining 90+ hours a week.

Now, you are just another disposa-geek. They'll use you up, then fire you and hire some MCSE for less. Even if it is a Unix job.
