uh-huh. that was terrible. why didn't you just link to the strips themselves?

besides, this was already a fairly notorious week of strips.

If Garfield's been in a fugue of denial, doomed to relive his memories of life as a spectre in the house where he once lived with Odie & Jon, it'd explain why that strip is monotonous and repetitive, but what's the excuse for every other strip on the comics page? In fact, come to think of it, the entire newspaper industry is a ghost of its former self that refuses to die. Maybe Davis was poking fun at the entire idea of a comics page. Same crap over and over. Comics are dead.

Little known fact: McCollum was found dead in a room with both Ozzy albums and books of Garfield comic strips: a deadly combination.

the real reason Garfield is dead is because Calvin stuck the fat cat's head under water for several minutes and then used a plunger to stuff the dead carcass down his mother's garbage disposal.

Has anyone here seen Allegro non Troppo? It's done in the same fashion of Fantasia, but without Disney's icky sentimentality. There's one short featuring a cat living in an abandoned house, and when the music turns happy for a moment the cat halucinates his old family and is happy. Then the music turns sour again and the cat returns to the abandoned house.

I think Jim Davis was trying to copy its dismal sadness for halloween, but rather failed at it.

I've seen it. I frankly thought the ghost-cat-living-in-its-family's-former-house segment dripped with icky sentimentality, though of the tear-jerk variety rather than Disney's happy flowers and fuzzy bunnies. OMG Bunnies! What's wrong with teh fuzzy bunnies? OTOH I loved the other post-armageddon segment, set to Ravel, where the thing rises out of the discarded Coke bottle and breeds and starts the whole cycle over again. That one was marred only by the bludgeon editorializing at the end.

Yeah, but what's the story with Garfield? What the hell was going on that week? Those strips barely make sense. Maybe Jim Davis's real cat died or something.

At the time the strips in question were written strips like Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes were enjoying great success, in large part to the strength of the writing. Even among his own artists, Berke Breathed and Bill Watterson were considered heros of the genre.

This particular series of strips left everyone at Davis' studio scratching their heads and wondering if he had cracked somehow.

In the end, as joeblough suggests, you really have to write this off as a ham-fisted attempt at philosophy. Other, less disturbing, attempts are scattered here-and-there throughout the Garfield universe.
