Google Spreadsheets is just the coolest

The 50 coolest websites : according to Time Magazine, at least. Who cares if they changed the world or not: as long as they're cool, that's all that really matters! Unsurprisingly, Digg's in there, as is MySpace (!), but they somehow seem to have neglected Metafilter, deciding that Cute Overload is way more hip instead. And no, Flickr's not in this one either.

These lists are as easy to make as they are meaningless. And yet people still flock to read them.

By the way, I'm little jealous about digg, seems like a site I could have made myself if I hadn't been so lazy all these years :P. I got pretty tired of slashdots un-ending suckfest a long time ago. Thank god something finally came around to dethrone them (not that I read either at this point)

Why are there so many lists coming out this week? Anyone care to shed light on why this is happening -- perhaps in blog/list form?

I go to cute overload only when one of the easily amused girls in my life gets sad and needs a quick email pick me up, personally.

If anyone knows the Internet, it's Time Magazine.

I am sure whoever authored that list spent countless days on the internet before coming up with the 50 best.

It's the silly season.

Why are there so many lists coming out this week?

And why does every one have to wind up on the MeFi front page?

Metafilter will never get mentioned in places like Time because the discussions of topics here are infinitely more insightful, informative, engaging, and unbiased than anything in Time. If you read Metafilter, Time and Newsweek, etc. are jokes.

The antidote (sfw, but youtube) to Cute Overload.

Heck. Nowadays everybody can make their own lists!

I don't think I've visited even five of those sites. I guess I must be uncool. Because Time said so.

Yikes, I can remember when lists like this use to have 'stileproject' at #1. God, I feel so old.

I don't know if these things are now not cool because Time said they are cool (which of course is lame) or because they were already passé to begin with.

I'm glad Mefi didn't appear in that list.

You have to pay to participate in Metafilter, maybe that makes it a little less cool.
posted by thirteenkiller at 8:45 AM on August 14, 2006

Metafilter: not in this one either.

I'm obsessed by Time Magazine. I read it every week. Its cover stares at me every time I slink past the corner candystore. I read it in the basement of the Berkeley Public Library.

Half of these sites are sites I've never heard of. And how the heck did Google Spreadsheets get onto *any* "Top 50" list at all?

If, hypothetically, Time's list included a site belonging to a fellow MeFite, could he request that the community only make fun of the other 49?

Is Google Spreadsheets like the Satan's spawn of websites, or is there some slippery meme that I'm missing?

The 9? So some people/corporations paid to be on this list, right?

Frankly Digg is quickly getting the exact same issues that have come to plague slashdot. But they do have more stories daily.

I don't know that I'm missing much by not being a visitor to most of these. Oh yeah, I'm not enjoying the eye-stabbing, vomit-inducing design of the average MySpace page.

The goggles! They do nothing!

I propose the immediate application of the death penalty to whoever uses animated .gifs as a page background.
