What I find most bizarre about this is that Mayor Willie has been legally separated from his wife for 20 years and yet they apparently have no intention of divorcing. I can't imagine that his constituents care very much, but what sort of advantages does this arrangement have for them? posted by MrBaliHai at 8:18 AM on January 21, 2001
Condoms make boffo water balloons. posted by rodii at 8:54 AM on January 21, 2001
I know he's separated so it's really not that big of an issue but I really like the way he's honest about it. What he said about his career not being an issue was also very cool.
You make a good point, Steven, but condoms don't always work. So maybe we can't blame this one on stupidity. Doubtful though. posted by crushed at 2:30 PM on January 21, 2001
Explain again to me what was stupid about it? posted by dhartung at 12:50 AM on January 22, 2001
Dan, I think that anyone who is reasonably well educated who gets surprised by a baby is stupid. Birth control now is cheap, effective and readily available. IMHO no child should be conceived except deliberately and with love. posted by Steven Den Beste at 5:44 AM on January 22, 2001

But the point is, no method of birth control is 100% effective. Yes, it is possible to be surprised even when she is taking the pill, he is using a condom, and she's not even supposed to be fertile at this time of the month. posted by daveadams at 9:32 AM on January 22, 2001
What I meant by stupidity was being surprised by a pregnancy after not using any form of birth control. Which, sadly, people are still prone to do. posted by crushed at 3:23 PM on January 22, 2001
