Disclaimer: I'm kidding above, but does secession seem as crazy to you as it does to me? Why can't this state let it go? Will the president ever become the leader of the nation if he can't stop making us all aware he's from Texas? After Clintion took office, I didn't hear much about Arkansas again (besides of course, the real estate scandals in his past).

As someone who has recently driven the length of Texas, on the featureless, interminable, expanse that is the 10 freeway, I have only this to say to Texocentric Secessionists:
"Don't let the door hit you in the ass."
Well, I suppose we should keep Austin, cause some coolfolks live there. But ya'll can have the rest.
Speaking of which, I think we should start a SXSW thread on Metafilter. Many of us, I know, are going to be there. Metafilter should throw a party. posted by waxpancake at 12:40 AM on January 21, 2001
With all the profit Metafilter has made, sure, why not? Meet me at a taco bell, the first $0.59 burrito is on me! posted by mathowie at 2:03 AM on January 21, 2001

I've lived in Texas. Christ I fucking hate Texas.

Even if Texas were to secede, don't you think it'd still want to run the remaining US? posted by holgate at 8:25 AM on January 21, 2001
Oh. Matt: that photo of GWB? Isn't that a clip-on bow tie?
Dear me. posted by holgate at 8:27 AM on January 21, 2001
Of course, even the real government of Texas is using the tourism sales pitch "a whole other country".
These guys are quite active, though it would be wise to check all of the supporting grammar before attending a meeting -- are you at the Provisional Government of the Republic of Texas, the Second Republic of Texas (a Virtual Republic), or the unaffiliated (and somewhat miffed) Sons of the Republic of Texas, an historical group?
Still, if it means they take Dubya back, I'm for it ... except that would make Cheney President. Do we really want the source of Richard Dreyfuss' lampoon of a Republican stuffed shirt in The American President (down to the lopsided facial gestures) running the place? posted by dhartung at 9:25 AM on January 21, 2001
(speaking of a MetaFilter party -- well, not really -- Uber will be throwing a party one of the nights of SXSW. Everyone is invited. Details will follow)
