Hilarious. I just had an experience like that last night with a Dell tech support rep.

Cisco has support engineers all over the planet, so when I was working for a big datacenter I got used to listening very closely. Oddly, the most difficult accents for me to pick up on were mostly from the UK.

Yeah, those brown people can't speak english and have funny names. HI-larious!

Funnier than the translation is that the idiot that put it together is making fun of someone's english when his own spelling/grammar sucks. It's "promoting [permitting] me to" not "promoting me too".

But it is.

dobbs, it's not a simple manner as "laugh at the silly foreigners", the humor is more in the situation that is being created by companies doing these funny pairings of people from different cultures and with different primary langauages, and having them work out technical (sometimes highly technical) problems together. It can get very difficult. The real humor in this example was HOW BAD his english was compared to the typical tech support rep. The video isn't making fun of "brown people" it's making fun of this one (we can guess brown) person.

I contend that you have entirely made this up in order to feel better about laughing.

Hi-larious. And when India Teleconglomerate Co. outsources its domestic customer service to call centers to the US, dobbs can have the last laugh. (But not until then.)

I spoke to a credit card rep in Mumbai whose nom de callcenter was "Ramon Martinez." I kid you not. (Someone must have told him this was "American-sounding." Awesome.)

I laughed, but felt guilty about it. Call it even?

First, you are assuming that he is "brown". Second, I would have find this equally funny if he were green, pink, or polka-dotted. The humor is the same as mis-heard lyrics. It has nothing to do with race.

Gimme a break, LoopyG. Listen to the video and don't read the subtitles: "... calling from Microsoft Support Central. This is regarding case which we were working on. I just wanted to know what was the status of that case. Are you still facing the same problem or after my suggestion or the changes what you made is the problem resolved or not? Because in application log I'm not able to see any further error permitting me to replicate application problem. I just wanted to know, like, what is the status right now--if you're able to send the mail from both sides* or does it affect the application on both sides or not? Please feel free to call me or send me an email. Thank you very much. Bye bye."

*or sites--presumably the intended recipient would know.

you can understand him if you don't read the subtitles. it is funny, but its low hanging fruit. and in any case, my guess is he speaks his second language a lot better than you speak yours.

Ah-HAH! Got you. My second language is the Language of Sexxxxy. And baby. I'm fluent.

I contend that you have entirely made yourself up in order to feel better about feeling superior.

I contend that The Fish is a nice affable guy I wouldn't mind do ing coffee with, I further contend that this was funny, and even further contend that The Fish also has a chuckle now and then about the lusers he get to talk to at work.

And get this: all this could be true at the same time.

dobbs, I heard what you transcribed, but I've lived well over a decade immersed in a non-native English speaking environment so there is a chance I try a wee bit harder than those surrounded by fewer accents.

"Low hanging fruit" has just entered my euphemistic vocabularium.

bye bye.

I'm just disappointed this has nothing to do with Bruno and Boots.
posted by joannemerriam at 6:09 PM on August 18, 2006

it's not funny because he's brown, it's funny because he has an accent and left a near-indecipherable phone message.
posted by owhydididoit at 9:50 PM on August 18, 2006

It's not even really that funny.

Any particular reason the video uses a picture of a Japanese guy, when the speaker's accent is from the Indian subcontinent? Is it just because pictures of Japanese people are, you know, funnier if you laugh at people who don't look like you?
