About as subtle as an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist.

Mediocre video for a mediocre song containing a mediocre twist to make a mediocre point.

Touché!

But please tell me what is the saving grace for this mediocre fpp? I prefer monkeys eating their own cum more than I do single link posts to amateur music videos by myspace artists. Best of the web and all that.

More America-hating Hollywood Liberal Jewish Media/Entertainment propaganda.

Hey is this video by any chance about a soldier who's coming home, but - get this - the soldier is actually dead?

That would blow my mind! Tell me if I'm right or elsewise.

(I agree this is a mediocre video etc. but I respect the artists for actually, you know, *creating* it. Making something judgeable as complete craap is hard enough, and this goes beyond that by a bit.

I also agree this is a mediocre fpp but it does give everyone to hash out our positions on the war again so it can't be all bad ;)

Decent guitar work. The singer is very charming but has a somewhat delicate or even weak voice. The video is a bit gratingly simplistic, though, with the apple pie, #1 mom shirt, and the evil, faceless incarnation of Government.

They telegraphed the twist, and I don't understand the whole laughing Mom bit at the end. Otherwise, A for effort.

See, this is why women shouldn't be allowed in the army: their corpses WON'T STOP SINGING.

Yea fer real heywood, people 'round here don't seem to have much of an opinion one way or t'other about the war. I, for one, think that what's happened in Iraq is nothing short of a miracle. (via Salon)

Women shouldn't be allowed in any of the services because they drive down morale with their incessant bitching. Same with homos, apart from the leather boys. Oh and the bear guys, they hardly ever bitch. Nice use of the mediocre tag btw.

That was just wrong. That soldier was out of uniform.

Why all the hate? The video is admittedly heavy-handed in its imagery, but the song is very well-written and -performed.

I avoid making sni[ppy comments and I have no strong op[inion on this post other than if someone got caught up in a war that he or she may or may not agree with, then coming back is a good thing. But" that fucking moron wlfclll123 with his anti-semitic scum remark is way out of libne. Tell me, moon: did you serve in the service? I served in a war and not to read asses like you with your crazed remarks. I am Jewish and have been twice in the army; my son was a marine...now let's hear about you and your contribution to America.

Considering the anti-war popular culture of the 60's the 2000's are pretty weak - even the fact this was created is notable enough. The two adults (children of the 60s) breaking out in laughter at the end was its strongest statement.

Wonder how the conversation would be going if this was done by the Dixie Chicks?
posted by spock at 11:34 AM on August 23, 2006

Yeah, the song was kind of nice and folksy but forgettable, and the video was obvious (the first time they showed the singer lying down against the black, in the intro to the song, it was clear that she was coming home dead).

However, two things please me about this post, and make me glad to have seen it: it affirms the increasing professionalism of self-created and produced works (and the more art moves out of the world of corporations and commodities, the better), and I'm certainly glad to see artists getting more involved in public discourse about the war. It's about time, whatever their opinion might be.

(and postroad: I think wfc123 was being ironical. A quick check of posting history reinforces this...once again, lack of inflection in type makes meaning ambiguous.)

Or if the song was about "Staying the course".

And yeah, I don't get the bit with the mom and gov't guy laughing hysterical at one another. Maybe it just happened during shooting (I mean, the actors started laughing because they were not actors and they were in a very personally surreal situation) and the director/editor just kept it in because it was strange/creepy in the context of the narrative.
