Yeah, gotta admit, I find the use of communism and USSR tags a bit pointless. I think I'll make a point of tagging anything to do with the US with 'slavery' and 'slaughterofnativeamericans' from now on. Also, Kifer85, notice how the boingboing post says 'via Neatorama' at the bottom? Not everything begins and ends with Cory Doctorow. And the FPP itself? I loved it. What was most appealing to me was the complete lack of interest shown by the people around the objects of attention. A guy sits next to you on the tube and starts cleaning out his assault rifle... I would personally move seats, or even look up. Much less if Stalin sat down next to me.

That doesn't look like an assault rifle to me. It looks like a paintball gun. I really dislike this englishrussia site. It's full of sensationalist crap and outright lies. But I don't see it at only this site. The sensationalism(often highly xeno/homophobic, in accordance with public opinion), the badly interpreted information, and the completely out-of-context and misleading photos seem to be some kind of standard here. These sites feed off the ignorance of the people reading them- both on young russians who don't know better, and the West, which has frightfully little info about the situation in Russia. I mean, the site's not all bad- nice pics of the recent church burning in St. Petersburg and a decent writeup on the Perelman photoshopping that's all over Russian Livejournals (MySpace can't work here because it's so ridiculously bandwidth intensive and slow). Also, because of the metered downloads here (on broadband, the majority are still on dialup), old tech like ICQ and Livejournal thrive, and Livejournal personalities here often specialize in re-presenting content from the western blogosphere in more-easily-downloadable sizes and with sometimes completely backwards interpretations. Also, keep in mind, any time you talk about the Web2.0! democratizing something, keep in mind that it's fucking useless to a very large part of the world, including me. Every transparent shiny PNG costs, and a zillion requests to digg for some bullshit javascript or whatever make such sites unusable. If you want to see some other Russian stuff, from the perspective of someone who's been here for 8 months, I have my own misleading photos. I took some photos at a zoological museum here, and I also spent ten days on a government biology preserve with a friend of mine.

When I was in 3rd grade, my friend and I stole an old rusted German machine gun from our school museum. Took it home on a bus, literally across the whole damned city. Not a single person asked us what we were doing with it. My Mom helped us carry it up the stairs to the apartment...
