I refuse to listen to Radiohead, and any variant thereof. It's a red flag, to me, when one listens to Radiohead. It glamourises depression, relishes in one's being trapped in a snake-filled pit of low mood, covering bites and venom with glitter and shine until it's something that every fan aspires to.

Imagine yourself in a wooden classroom, with desks made from trees that died long ago in the name of learning but serve now to do little but hold the names of those who have run the gauntlet before etched in ballpoint pen. A dusty window, dusty desks, clouds of dust stirring in the air as a result of your presence. Everything seems filtered through a sepia lens, colours all averaged until all has the same yellow-orange tint to it, reflecting the deadness of your perception and the blandness of your heart.

The scene is disturbed by a song, notes and melodies crawling under the shut door like spiders that want to entrap you in their silken robe. It's not alarming, it seems part of the way things should be; Radiohead, creeping under the door and down your spine, unnoticed because it fits the scene so perfectly, yet gradually binding your arms and legs until you are powerless to move and are trapped in that room.

That's why I refuse to listen to Radiohead. It's the tune you play by the fire while you sit in your living room entertaining demons.

I like Radiohead, but I don't see that it's all so depressing. Perhaps if you're big into lyrics, then, yes, but I generally listen to the sounds of vocals and ignore the words themselves. From a musical standpoint, Radiohead isn't particularly depressing. Mellow, perhaps, but not downer.

So? Since when does innovation = good?

IMHO, Radiohead was a decent band before they got on the innovation for innovation's sake tip (circa Kid A) and stopped writing good songs.

Back to the actual topic at hand...

As somebody who likes and understands crunk reasonably well, I think I can say that this is an extremely poor example of the genre. Neither Thom nor Lil Jon would be proud.

It's sort of cute as weird little techno oddities ("snaps out" is sort of quirkily quaint), but like pyramid termite, I think the kid should have just released the .it file.

You'd think the demons would be more into Dio-era Sabbath. Or at least something lame enough to explain why god won't let them back into Heaven.

Regarding the crunk radiohead, I saw this a while ago when it hit At Ease. I still don't know whether to laugh at the whole thing or cry. The song titles, at least, make me laugh.

Regarding the "depressing" thing: I don't find them depressing. I find them uplifting (particularly in person). Besides, when did "happy" become necessary? Must all bands aspire to be The Polyphonic Spree? The Flaming Lips? Must everyone be that joyous?

One man's depressing is another man's not-so-depressing.

For the people who dislike them: At least you don't need to worry about them getting much radio play these days!

Where are all you people that are so vocal about apparent 'bad' music when we need you? Where are you when Linkin Park, Nickelback and Papa Roach fill the airwaves? (And I guarantee you that more people listen to that bile than to Radiohead.)

Please, complain about truly awful music. Just know that claiming Radiohead contributes nothing to the world of music will, more often than not, get you laughed at.

Well, at least this morning I've found out I don't like 'crunk' or Radiohead, which I already knew. A dislike which, I guess I'll admit, has been based more on a sneering disregard of the people I used to encounter in school who were 'into' Radiohead, people who were pretty uncool and unhip to what was really going on in music but thought wearing a Radiohead t-shirt or whatever was the ultimate badge of coolness and hipness.
But I started a new job, in Oxford ironically, and inherited a computer onto which the previous drone had uploaded some of this Radiohead, and I must therefore also admit that occasionally a track has snuck into my own listening, something droney and instrumental and I've thought, wait a minute, what's that, it sounds pretty good... and it's been Radiohead.
Indeed I've had to feign an interest and knowledge of the band, to help make conversation with a RH-obsessed colleague, who also of late has become obsessed with the Tom York solo album, which I've heard more than enough of both in his car and, when he's jonesing and just can't help himself, in the office; enough to say that it's not terrible either.
But still, there are many, many better things you should be listening to, even among the sorry state of contemporary British music.

Radiohead fanboys are the greatest cause of Radiohead anti-fanboys. They're a decent band, with some really good tunes. However, every time someone praises them as the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ the Ever Living, they're just throwing gasoline on someone else's small smoldering ember of "didn't like them all that much", turning it into a great pillar of hateflame.

I've had the Rodeohead version for quite some time now, and I like it. I've always snuck a bit of bluegrass into my playlists because it's so damn spiffy and cheerful, and combining the two was hilarious :)

And yeah, Radiohead is one of my favourite bands (along with Powderfinger) - and I don't give a shit about what snarky people on the internet may think of it. I always wear headphones anyway, so if anyone has anything against my taste in music, it can't possibly be because it's ruining their day.

I'm sorry, I feel I need to clear something up: I don't think Radiohead is bad. I have listened to a lot of Radiohead. The reason I made the statements above is precisely because it is such potent music that I have no quarter for it. I personally find it depressing in a way unequaled by any other artist out there, is all.

We don't listen to that shit either. I couldn't name or hum a single song by any of those bands.

At least they try and be innovative in their music, much more than 90% of music can say.

If you're expecting more than 5% of anything to be good, you're kidding yourself. Radiohead may be better than 90% of the shit recorded today but that doesn't mean it's good or worth listening to. Do you honestly judge art by what it's better than--that's how you decide what to listen to, read, or look at?

Here's a tip: turn off your radio.

PS: Yorke did write the best song ever about masturbation but that was a long time ago and they've never equaled it, imo.
