Is this a promotional thing that's only going to last until the album is released? If so, this link will be useless in less than 24 hours.

I'm not a tv on the radio fan but I can't believe people are complaining about this. We're now regularly getting shitass youtube posts to awful music that's been available for years (Santana, the Dead, etc.), but when a post legitimately is best of the web, you all come out to complain.

And, whether you're a fan of the band or not (and as I said, I'm not), I think it's hard to say that links like this aren't exactly the reason MeFi exists: it's a link to something a number of people will enjoy; it's a link that shows a largish record label doing something that largish record labels rarely do (allowing you to hear a full album pre-purchase, for free!); it's a link that doesn't require explanation or discussion; it's a link to something that, were it not available at the link, would cost you moneyl; and, most importantly, it's a link to something that without the web would be impossible.

Thanks for the link, indecent.

Because some people feel that the musicians who enrich their lives deserve compensation so that they can go on making more of it? And some people might want some of the bands they like (if TV on the Radio ain't one of 'em) to follow suit and by spreading the word about something like this you encourage other artists and labels to do so whereas as downloading from illegal places does the opposite?

I think tv on the radio are excellent and I pay to see them whenever I can. They are great live, really fun, powerful sound. I've already heard the album and I'm buying it when it is released on cd. I didn't really need this post to say that, but I'm easing out of my 9/11 misanthropy so there you go. Stop fucking whining already and if you can't hang with a good snark, which is best in small potent does, don't try so hard, you get that red faced baby grunting out a lumpy green poop look and it doesn't suit you.

TV On The Radio are awesome, and it's not just Pitchfork saying that. Not that it really matters what the critics say, because you really can't deny the quality of "I Was A Lover" or "Playhouses".

unless i'm missing something, you're giving a band just as much money if you listen to their free, shitty web stream as if you listen to the illegally downloaded burn.

That said, I've been on a TV on the Radio kick lately, but this album sounded like a mediocre mess. There has been a TON of hype surrounding its release though, and that's generally enough to up your indie cred.

Cynical would be not listening to it and then saying "Oh, this is crap" just because someone else said he likes it.

I gave it a chance, listened to every track, and only then declared that I thought it was bad. While this may mean I'm an old fart who lacks what passes for style these days, it certainly wouldn't be indicative of cynicism.

And get the hell off my lawn.

Download it or listen to the webstream or don't. Like them or don't (be so scared of liking something that others like that you dismiss what others like as being in search of, oh ha ha, "indie cred" or don't). If you like it, buy the album and/or go see their shows. If you don't like it, by all means say you don't like it, even if you are old and you fart as mr_crash_davis does. Do not (or do, as you like, but don't imagine you are doing anything but complaining into the uncaring void, take it to the chaplain and get your TS card punched, as they say) have "this is the best of the web?" mapped to paste when you hit F5, as a certain tedious, never interesting, always sour, actively detrimental segment of the mefi population does, that shit just don't make no sense at all.

it'll be great when this line of thought is abolished once people begin to see that piracy isn't such a bad thing at all.

bob sarabia, I didn't say that, blue_beetle did.

jimmy, a great many of my friends and acquaintances are musicians and/or indie label-owners.* They work their asses off in studios, offices, and on stage and could not do it without selling product and charging for live shows. I don't know what fantasyland you live in where people can release art indefinitely to people who don't pay for it, but I'm willing to bet that in that world you yourself like to be compensated for the hours you put in at work.

Incidentally, if that world is one where any "line of thought is abolished", you can keep it, regardless of its hypothetical improvements to the real world.

*Hear some of them here. Free, and with their permission.

Maybe this album will get better as I listen to it more, but I was disappointed when I first heard it. I saw TV on the Radio open for Firewater on one of their first tours and I don't think they'd gotten the hang of touring yet, because by the time they got to Chicago, dudes' voices were shot, which really ruined the harmonies.

It looks like the full-streaming of an album is becoming pretty commonplace. Outkast did it a month ago with their (incredible but a-little-disappointing-at-first-listen) Idlewild on myspace.com. I think Brian Eno did it a few months ago. I don't remember who else but there have been more.

Not my cuppa, but I don't get people's beef with this.

There are precedents, and while some folks may dismiss the streaming music/RIAA be danged thing as old hat at best and Big Music Marketing at its co-opted worst, it is still an important development in how the internet has and continues to affect music distribution and artist's rights.

So shut up.

(This is an amazing album. No, sorry I didn't pay for it myself, but it's going to be huge and they will get rich anyway, thanks to people like us talking about it and more importantly people like PF.
I YSI'd 'Wolf Like Me' to my friend Ian, aka the Wolfman, so it could rock his wedding party in Ottawa this past Saturday and sure enough it did - more ka-ching for TOTR there I hope).

I'm gonna leave off the metacommentary about whether this was a good post or not, and say that I have felt progressively meh about TVotR. I still love the EP and their first album, but this just didn't do it for me,and every progressive listen made it less distinct and less enveloping, not more. Sophomore slump? Yeah...
(At least they cleaned it up from the promo version that first leaked... And I thought this had been out for months, but apparently just in England... Staggered release dates are retarded.)

TVotR are fairly polarizing. I'm proud to say that I don't feel that strongly about them.

But I'm listening to the new album now, thinking I should pick it up (have the first one, skipped the second one). So thanks for the link.

And ya know, if you really, really like a band, why do you care if other people don't? That always amuses me in music threads. I mean, I have friends IRL who hate certain bands that I like, and vice versa. We don't have fights about it. Yet, if some anonymous wanker craps on your band here, people go into conniptions.
