I will refrain from consigning this post to the lowest depths of hell if and only if it preempts any further posts on this shopworn topic. If another one is allowed to infest the front page in two days, hellzapoppin', me buckos! posted by languagehat at 12:26 PM on September 17, 2006
Exactly. Every September 19th should be dedicated to celebrating the vocabulary of a new Pop Culture Archetype. I vote for "Talk Like a 1930's G-Man Day" for 2007. posted by Iridic at 12:35 PM on September 17, 2006
I have a question, does anyone actually say, "Tomaaato" except in the song? posted by nyxxxx at 12:36 PM on September 17, 2006
I say tomahto. But I'm from Ireland. Thanks isopraxis for reminding me to avoid the internets on tuesday. posted by jamesonandwater at 12:46 PM on September 17, 2006
I say tomahto as well, being from the UK. But does anyone say potahto? That's the real burning issue here. posted by teleskiving at 1:00 PM on September 17, 2006

That "wenches" link was sorta mean. Funny, but mean.
"Talk like a Marxist academic" was sorta fun one semester. For the professor, that is. I was completely baffled. posted by pax digita at 2:06 PM on September 17, 2006

I vote for talk like a mime day. But if I can't get the groundswell of support I need for that, I'll second Iridic's "Talk Like a 1930's G-Man Day" for 2007.

Quite yer bellyachin' kid, we got some bootleggers on the lam and if we don't get 'em in the clink, it's gonna be our asses, see?
Hmm. That's harder than it looks. posted by quin at 6:18 PM on September 17, 2006
I'm pretty sure it's just me, but it seems like recently there's been about one International Talk Like a Pirate Day per month. I think it's kind of a cool meme, but it's getting kind of overplayed. posted by jiawen at 8:08 PM on September 17, 2006
Sadly Sweden's pirate party didn't get any seats. Plus the Christian Democrat f*ckers who support the MPAA are in the ruling alliance. posted by jeffburdges at 1:12 AM on September 18, 2006

GODDAMNIT.
'Avast' is not a greeting. It means 'to cease, stop, or stay'.
Spread the word, mateys--I'll keelhaul the next swine that greets me with 'avast'. posted by oats at 2:03 PM on September 18, 2006
oats has a point, the proper seafaring greeting is, of course, 'Ahoy'. I suspect Avast! would have been called to a boat from a pirate ship in much the same way nowadays we have the term 'Freeze!'
In a strange sort of way, one could call that a greeting, but not one you would use when meeting a fellow pirate in the bar. Unless of course you were planning on shooting him.
But then, I'm just speculating here. posted by quin at 4:48 PM on September 18, 2006
