oats has a point, the proper seafaring greeting is, of course, 'Ahoy'. I suspect Avast! would have been called to a boat from a pirate ship in much the same way nowadays we have the term 'Freeze!' In a strange sort of way, one could call that a greeting, but not one you would use when meeting a fellow pirate in the bar. Unless of course you were planning on shooting him. But then, I'm just speculating here.
