I was also hoping to see some sort of stop-motion animation using potatoes... Then again that post is a pretty decent vindication of the opinion that videocasting is teh suck. I was bad enough when an audio rendition of pointless blog entries (podcasting) became all the hype, but now we're supposed to think that doing the same thing in front of a webcam is some sort of great leap forward? Meh. It's just derivative, without much value added... like most video conferencing that doesn't involve naked people. My company just spent a pretty penny getting us set up with video conferencing facilities, and the only benefit we've noted -- once the novelty of it wore off -- is that we can now see people drinking coffee and eating donut around a conference table somewhere else. I'm sure that was really worth the money spent. Maybe that attitude is why I didn't get suckered into the whole "lonelygirl15" nonsense. I think that stuff's largely a waste of YouTube's capabilities. It's just boring. This is a much better use for it. It's creative, interesting, and requires planning. This is fun and exciting. I would have missed this if it weren't on YouTube. And that's just three examples of better uses of YouTube than videocasting.

Most of these people are doing a videocast without having any idea why they're making one in the first place, or having anything to say... it's kinda sad. And the music just reinforces that. But then I guess that's the point of this little montage. I had to stop it halfway through out of dread that I might die of boredom.

Arvo Part is woefully underexposed here in the states, so I'm glad to see him getting some love. I don't like video blogging in general; the static-to-content ratio is far, far too high to bother with it most of the time. This shows, however, why it can be a good thing. Snapshots into people's lives, some genuinely involving moments, and on a few occasions for me, a smile or two. Everyone who shut it off at the halfway point kind if missed the entire point, but that doesn't surprise me at all.

I thought it was a lovely art project. The source materials may be raw and kind of puerile but I think the video managed to extract a larger sense of humanity from them. The subject matter elicits too much pat knee-jerkism, however: "Of course, I only watched about 30 seconds.". Like, good for you, go pee in the punchbowl now, eh? God forbid you should actually evaluate anything before you go shooting off your shit.

Perhaps some FPPs contribute little to our teeming, but none contribute so little as the "I didn't like it/Why'd you suggest I watch that" comment. Sooo, while this video threatens to reek of the same contrived emotion as the American Beauty wind/bag video, its also doing a decent job of collaging together something quintessentially human from a grab bag of video flotsam. Thus, I will comment, and deem this constructive, additive to the human experience, and appreciated. And, in general, not be freakin' douche about it, youtube or not... (seams ripping....can't hold together...why purple pants...?!!!?)
