the unbearable lightness of being

Sven Nykvist leaves us. A master at the subtle manipulation of light, the multiple academy award winner and longtime Ingmar Bergman collaborator (including Persona, and the Through a Glass Darkly/Winter Light/The Silence trilogy) has passed away at 83.

I was also saddened to learn that he suffered from aphasia.

In addition to all the Bergman stuff, I particularly dig Nykvist's Woody Allen stuff, like Another Woman, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Celebrity.

Also, The Ox (directed by Nykvist) is actually very good.

His last movie was Curtain Call. How clever is that?

Sad news. The Sacrifice is probably the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.

A genius, responsible for some of the most amazing cinematography ... how long will it be before Bergman shuffles off this mortal coil?

Rest in peace.

Seconded. It was one of the most moving films I've ever seen. I'd forgotten that Nykvist worked on it.

Fanny and Alexander is one of my favorite movies. I hate to hear about this kind of stuff while I'm at work. It's embarrassing when someone sees me crying at my desk.
