His, Mine, Yours, Ours

Inspired by comments Brian Eno made in his book A Year with Swollen Appendices, Duncan Sheik released White Limousine with two discs: One, a CD labeled Mine and the other a DVD labeled Yours. The former contains his stereo mixes, while the latter contains WAV files of the individual elements of the mixes for each song. Sheik is requesting that people remix his CD to their liking, and has even provided a place for people to upload their efforts. The best remixes will be streamed on the remix site, and some will even be released as downloads.

What happens when people inject others copyrighted materials into their mixes? I suppose those would never make it to the streaming or D/L sections.

Oddly, I was just this minute looking at a promo page for Spring Awakening, which includes a video interview with Sheik and some excellent clips from the show.

What happens when people inject others copyrighted materials into their mixes?

if DM's Grey Album is any indication, fame, fortune, and phat beats are what happen.

I was doing some housecleaning recently, and I found a picture of Duncan Sheik from my college yearbook. (I was Brown University, Class of 1994. Duncan Sheik was Class of 1992.) Other minor celebrities I found in there include Congressman Bobby Jindal (then listed as Piyush Jindal), Alexandra Tydings (Aphrodite on Xena), Tracee Ellis Ross (Diana's daughter & Joan on Girlfriends), and non-fiction authors Eric Klinenberg, Eyal Press, and Alyssa Quart. I think Lisa Loeb was class of 1991, but I have no picture alas.

I met Duncan a couple of years ago when he composed music for a stage show I worked on in college. He seems to be a very chill guy, and he plays a great acoustic set. I'm glad (and not surprised) to see he's one of the artists embracing participatory media and turning it into a positive force for himself and his audience. If I ever get some time off work to compose/mix, I might take a stab at this.

As has been mentioned regarding Dangermouse, young producers should snatch this up and get to work.

This seems to be something of a trend. X-Press 2 did something similar with their new single. I recommend remix #4 (not a self-promoting link but it was done by a friend of mine)
