We do not host any videos of The Simpsons or upload them anywhere we just link them to our page.

I didn't host any of those pictures of those naked kids, I just linked to them.

This brings a whole new meaning to the Simpsons' writers taunt to internet nerds that they've given us hundreds of hours of entertainment for free. Oh, Mike Scully, no longer will I bitch about the shows declining quality since now, verily, I can get the show for free (if I so chose).

How absolutely irritating. To do something so plainly against the will of the MPAA, and yet not to provide any means of saving the files locally ... it just pisses me off. These guys are going to get a C&D. Their ISPs, their hosts and their host's grandma's cats are going to get a C&D. Why the hell, knowing that, would they deliberately stick the actual meat of the content behind an obscuring modesty-screen of .swf?

I really expected this to be torrents, so I was pleasantly surprised that it was Flash video.

Why? It just means it's all going to be taken down pretty quickly. At least if they were torrents you would actually be able to save them and keep them. This site won't last the weekend (at the vary least the ads will be pulled)

The interstitial ads are highly annoying as well. It's one thing to pirate someone's stuff for altruistic purposes, it's another to try to make money off of it, and it's a third thing to make money off it via a highly annoying advertising mechanism.

To put it another way (and leaving aside that their is no deprivation of the owner of an item itself in copyright violation, merely a deprivation of the opportunity to exchange a copy for money), what these tools have done is analogous to wilfully stealing money from a bank, running out of that bank, and then running down the road to cross at the pedestrian crossing because it is illegal to jaywalk. So frustrating!

Gotcha. Everyone, act casual!

So...what do people think about the, uh, Smipsons? Does everybody enjoy watching it in a perfectly legal venue? Boy howdy, I know I do!

what these tools have done is analogous to wilfully stealing money from a bank, running out of that bank, and then running down the road to cross at the pedestrian crossing because it is illegal to jaywalk.

Not analogous at all. The master copies of these episodes still exist, unchanged, somewhere in Fox's posession. The DVD copies of these episodes (the ones released, of course) still exist in every fracking DVD store in the country. No bank money has been stolen at all.

This is more analogous to taking a photo of Francis Bacon's Blood on the Floor with a cell phone in a museum and then posting it to your website.

The "cash from a bank" comparison always fails in intellectual property situations.

The "cash from a bank" comparison always fails in intellectual property situations.

Well ... yes, it fails intellectually, but only intellectually. Legally, it's still the underpinning assumption of copyright law. Which is a pretty good argument for changing copyright law, but it's awfully hard to get someone to understand something if their income depends on them not understanding it.

bonaldi: Ah, yes, you're right about his point, about which I was confused. Thanks. I still think the analogy is flawed, though, so extract my Sci-Fi Channel expletive and add some polite stuff at the first, like, "Well, you're right about the half-assedness, but, to be fair, your comparison is..." etc., and I stand by my rant.

GrowABrain - trust me on this: Season 7, "Much Apu About Nothing". As an immigrant to our country (and soon to be immigrant to another country!), hopefully you'll find something darkly funny in the piece. It's my favorite episode in the entire series.

At least if they were torrents you would actually be able to save them and keep them.

Yeah, but you don't need the posted site to find full-season torrents of the Simpsons.

(Not that I bother pirating Simpsons. I just Tivo the two episodes they show a day. That usually gives me as many as I want to watch whenever I want to watch them.)

aeschenkarnos: I'm pretty sure you're entirely wrong there. It's the underpinning assumption of many copyright holders' news releases, yes, but the law itself does treat copyright infringement differently from theft. (Even the phrase "intellectual property" is a long-running and very successful PR campaign to get people to think of copyright in terms of property, which historically — I am not a law historian — it hasn't been.)

Well, no, the underpinning assumption of copyright law is the moral right of the author in his creation. From the beginning it is about duplication, which makes any analogy to things that are about possession and not duplication problematic.

are you seriously, aeschenkarnos, pissed because they have merely put every episode, accessible from anywhere in the world, up for streaming to anyone who requests it at any time?

Yes, I am. Streaming video is exactly like video, except that, by design, it only works at a computer with a current online connection when the browser is pointed at a particular website. There are at least four ways for a streaming video feed to break: (1) interruption in the viewer's internet connection; (2) interruption in the provider's internet connection; (3) software failure (eg, changing the codecs); (4) removal of the video by the website provider, for whatever reason.

Video files "in nature" are saveable. They are the data format of a video playing program. To put them into some kind of unsaveable streamed format requires some kind of conversion. It's a taking away of usefulness, a crippling of the functionality. Unless you figure out some way to capture video streaming, you can't do anything (eg show it on a different device, share it with friends, keep an archival copy) with it.

I'm pissed with these guys because although they obviously have little or no regard for copyright holders' putative rights, they somehow nonetheless have embraced the far more idiotic "right" that derives from copyrightism: the "right" of a provider to intrude control into the time, place and method by which the provided files are viewed.

Of course I could, if I could be bothered to, go download these videos from elsewhere. Or I could go buy boxed sets of the seasons on DVD, since it's far easier, cheaper in terms of my time and effort, and the quality is better. My annoyance comes from the fact is that I am completely at a loss to follow the reasoning behind their contradictory (a) willingness to show the Simpsons videos; and (b) insistence, with some effort (as shown by the complicated URL munging and the enclosure of a FLV player which acts on a FLV file with a hidden URL inside a SWF file) that each viewer separately download each episode each time they wish to view it.

Bah, I have all the futurama episodes on my TiVo (modded w/ a second HD - 160GB total) plus some good simpsons episodes from syndication. Family guy is in there too. Its nice to go and pull up every episode from the series. I have the DVD too. If I were more ambitious, I'd go through the steps to extract each show onto my computer's HD, and form there share the video with the TiVo so I could have the entire episodes on my computer and watch them on my TiVo.

not that i really care, but im pretty sure this is just the way the technology works-- for flash video you just have one flash .swf player and load the videos into it so one doesnt have to wait for the whole thing to load before they start watching. and yes the firefox extension works.. im downloading the files from dailymotion right now

aeschenkarnos, you're sounding like a petulant child here. Your complaint is as if someone invited you to their house to watch the Super Bowl, and you complained that they didn't capture everything to a DVD so you can take it with you when you leave.

No, it's like some guy said, "My video store has recordings of the Simpsons seasons. All of them, in order. Come around to my house and sit on milk crates and watch it on my 13-inch TV. And if I feel like it, I'll turn off the TV and throw you out." And you ask them, "Hmm, so where's this video store?" and they say "I absolutely refuse to tell you."

It's nice of them to invite you around and all, and you might want to go anyway, but let's say you wanted to invite your friends to your house to watch the Superbowl on your own TV, and sit in your chairs, and you know that video store is just as easy to get to from your house as his ... well, you'd think that guy was being kind of a jerk. I mean, what's his deal?

Of course, you might think that another invited guest who kicked up a fuss about not being told where the video store was, was being a jerk too. Or even, instead. Hell, he can kick back on the milk crates and suck down the free tap water and watch the thirteen inches of screen real estate and listen to the tinny speaker while the trains rattle by, just like the rest of us. Or find his own damn video store. Everyone knows every video store in the neighbourhood has one or two seasons. Hell, seasons 4 and 7 were at the Blockbuster yesterday. Maybe season 3 too, though the lable was torn off, so it's hard to tell.

I love that the transcripts are there! Is it wrong to save those?

I think I'm going to make a screen saver that displays random passages from these. They all invoke such fond memories for me.

At work, Homer's wearing his Tom Landry hat and coaching his team, but
they're quite exhausted from the work he's asking from them. From
experience, Homer knows that fatigue requires only one solution:
hammocks. He goes straight to his "boss".

Hank: Uh, hi, Homer. What can I do for you?
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.
Hank: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that?
Hammocks! Homer, there's four places. There's the Hammock Hut,
       that's on third.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Hank: There's Hammocks-R-Us, that's on third too. You got
       Put-Your-Butt-There?
Homer: Mm-Hmm.
Hank: That's on third. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot... Matter of fact,
they're all in the same complex; it's the hammock complex on
       third.
Homer: Oh, the hammock district.
Hank: That's right.

Homer: Uh... you have any sugar around here?
Hank: Sugar? Sure. [fumbles in his pockets, takes out a few handfuls
of sugar] There you go. Sorry it's not in packages. Want some
       cream?
Homer: Uh... I... no.

This makes me very sad, because every time I've seen it aired in a very long time - including on this site - they cut out the cream bit. It stops after "packages".

At least I know I didn't imagine it.

With a grim face, Encyclopedia Brown replied, "I bet I know who's behind all this."

Sally Kimball nodded her head and answered, "Bugs Meany!"

Encyclopedia and Sally then went to the Tigers’ clubhouse. The clubhouse was a shed behind Mr. Sweeney’s Auto Body Shop. They found Bugs Meany inside the clubhouse. Bugs Meany was an older boy with freckles and red hair. He was placing old wooden boards atop some milk crates, so that the milk crates and boards could act as makeshift benches.

On the back wall of the Tigers' clubhouse hung a large banner, made from an old bedsheet. The banner typically had the name "TIGERS" painted in large letters. Recently, someone had crossed out the "TIGERS" and had written "STREAMCASTS" instead.

because every time I've seen it aired in a very long time - including on this site - they cut out the cream bit

That's because the episodes go through significant editting and changes between the time they are first broadcast and the time they go out to syndication/DVD. Which is why my collection is strictly first-run episodes (where different from the DVDs).
