Breaking News: Hijacked! A Turkish airliner carrying 107 passengers flying from Tirana to Istanbul has been hijacked by two Turks simply to protest Pope's visit to Turkey and are ready to surrender. No passengers have been hurt. Greece and Italy sent fighter jets to escort it before it landed in Brindisi, Italy.

I'm sure it scared the crap out of the people on board, but the plane has landed safely. No injuries to anybody. The hijackers surrendered.

To ask an age-old question, why is this on MetaFilter?

I'm hijacking this thread to protest its shittiness!

Who's with me?!?

Nice to see a traditional protest hijacking for once. Those terrorists have totally hijacked hijacking, I tell you.

ok... so... that was completely retarded. people seriously need to think their so called "statements" through before making them.

Isn't this the first hijacking since 9/11? I think it's sorta big news. I mean, it's already in wikipedia.

Wikipedia is ridiculous. Seriously. The pope fucking farts and it has it's own page 5 minutes later. "This article describes a current event!"

I am sick and tired of all the whacked out people who became angry just because they couldn't find all of the popes in the pizza.

No doubt the pope will say something stupid to escalate the situation. In other news: North Korea to help Repedlicans by staging nuclear test.

I kinda thought that hijackings where you expect to survive the experience were a thing of the past. If someone took your plane and told everyone to sit tight because they have no intention of hurting anyone, would you believe them?

Threat of a liquid bomb on plane = banning of liquids
Hijacking of plane = banning of... hijackers?

Oh, and my previous wikipedia comment was sarcastic. I just forgot the /sarc tag.

A Turkish friend of mine sent me this article -- "Pope, Islam, and the Sword" -- today. I too think it is worth the time to read.

Fire and Wings, the plane was Turkish and the hijackers were Turkish, plus lots of Albanians are ethnically Turkish, so it's really tough to report this story without speaking to Turks and maybe saying "Turk" or "Turkish" now and again.
