Robert Garside

Robert Garside has received uncritical media coverage as he attempts to get into the Guiness Book of Records for being the first man to run around the world.
David Blaikie maintains Ultramarathon World (an online magazine for runners who find marathons too short) and is more than a little skeptical of Garside's claims.
The inevitable legal threats result.

A person who runs a website for runners who think marathons are too short is allegedly slandering a man who's attempting to be the first person to run around the world? Without reading deep into this, methinks Blaikie is upset someone beat him to the idea.

I love this quote from Garside's e-mail threatening to sue Blaikie:
You are clearly waging a campaign on me to discredit me. BUT HAVE (AT LEAST) MADE ONE GRAVE ERROR: You have used ONE source with which to base your info., and that source was my Internet diary pages.

Feh. Ultramarathons are for sissies.

Actually, tomorama, people involved in this kind of sport are quite keen on documentation and verification. The problem is that Garside is rather sloppy on both points. Whether he's doing a LOT of running isn't in question, but whether he's doing this to get into the record books is.
