I don't even know what to say. I could say that the "Leave it to Beaver" shot at the end of Vernon whoever's campaign ad is a lot more telling than people probably realize - isn't it obvious that some people in this country would like to see us go right back to the 50s? No legal abortion or reliable birth control (other than total abstinence, of course), segregation, total faith in the government, no public acknowledgement of any lifestyle choices other than the 2.3 kids, dog, white picket fence. Only three heavily-regulated television channels, pornography kept in brown paper, behind the counter, where you can only get it if you know who and how to ask (and are wearing a trenchcoat, fedora and dark sunglasses). Women at home taking care of the spawn instead of (gasp!) having careers. No such thing as feminism, chicks have had the vote for a while, but everyone knows a real woman knows just how to influence her man to vote the right way, anyway. The thing is, that genie is already out of the bottle (and the womb, and the closet), and he/she won't go back in. I doubt this latest line of attack is going to work. My neighbor, an about-to-retire African-American lady who has worked in the federal government for most of her adult life, joked during a political discussion last week that if there isn't a MAJOR change from the midterms, and an even bigger one in 2008, she's going back to Africa. I think she'd be insulted by these ads, and frankly, so am I. Save pimps' and hos' babies so they can grow up to vote Republican! Durhey, could be, but the timing is awfully tight. That type of thing usually works best with a bunch of lead time for indivdual processing. Early and absentee voting has begun in many places already. Whne are the Republicans going to denounce the ad/s ? next Tuesdays marks 2 weeks to the general election, a bit late for subtile. I think it is real, and may have more backlash than assist. 2 weeks, geeze, almost time to start holding your breath that nothing huge comes down the pipeline, and there again it'd be all timing, too close to the election and people vote their intial emotional reaction which could be negative, so the next 10 days are the most crutial.

I think you have all underestimated how convincing these ads can be. The fact is, the organizations who are promoting the have done their research - they wouldn't spend money on ads that were ineffective. Democrats need to have a backup plan (or maybe a blackup plan).

The ad is certainly not intended to win Blacks to the Republicans -- they put out token efforts, but the Republicans wrote off the Black population in 1968. It's plainly aimed at the people who think Blacks talk and act like that: white racists, who have been one of the Republican mainstays since the start of the "Southern Strategy."

As an aside (in reference to the "Republicans have always looked out for us" ad on youtube), most people here are aware that the parties basically traded names mid-century. It's so sickening that they're blaming Democrats for something that they did, and are aware of the evilness of. Can you imagine, writing "Democrats started the KKK", knowing that it was your party? Or that "Lincoln was a Republican"? Ok, I suppose it's possible that the writer of the ads wasn't aware of it, but it's still the kind of thing that makes you say "Dayam".

Was referring to Saw this on FOX news the other day. They read a transcription of the commercial while displaying it as they read. My favorite bit is when they spelled 'tout suite' as the anglicized 'toot sweet'. It looks absolutely ridiculous spelled that way. posted by lyam at 9:10 AM PST on October 19 [+] [!] Hence, video. I really wanted to see the Fox take on the ad.

Can you imagine, writing "Democrats started the KKK", knowing that it was your party? Or that "Lincoln was a Republican"? Ok, I suppose it's possible that the writer of the ads wasn't aware of it, but it's still the kind of thing that makes you say "Dayam". posted by hoborg at 3:58 PM EST on October 19 [+] [!] Democrats did start the KKK and Lincoln was a Republican; what's your point.

It's disingenuous, to say the least, to suggest that "democrats started the KKK." The implication is that the KKK is a part of the democratic party, which it is/was not. Historically, segregationist southerners voted democrat, mostly because of a little thing called the civil war, but the democratic party has no affiliation with the KKK. It's a little bit like saying that republicans "started" modern hate groups whose membership is more likely to associate itself with the most reactionary and nativist elements of the contemporary republican party. Yes, Lincoln was indeed a republican.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that Black Man #2 (Dennis), in the ad was a white guy, making the ad slightly less racist, but still as stupid. Also, the "advertisment" scripts have an awful lot of spelling errors in them. (Even the last sentence of the front page says "Please help us stay an ther air" So I'm leaning away from "republican fake ad used to make republicans think democrats are making fake republican ads" and more towards "one small, poorly managed group writing and recording their own awful ads".

(AP) — Orange County Republican leaders on Thursday called for the withdrawal of a GOP congressional candidate they believe sent a letter threatening Hispanic immigrant voters with arrest. Tan D. Nguyen denied knowing anything about the letter in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press, but said he fired a campaign staffer who may have been responsible for it. County Republican Chairman Scott Baugh, however, said that after speaking with state investigators and the company that distributed the mailer, he believes Nguyen had direct knowledge of "obnoxious and reprehensible" letter. Indeed, taosbat. The facts that Lincoln was a Republican and that Democrats started the KKK have little bearing on the parties' current platforms. Republicans these days are supposed to be about, among other things, "states' rights", hardly a Lincoln plank.

If you haven't already, it's worth following peeedro's link, just for the headline "Black GOP Groups Woo Mfume to Back Steele" which I had to read several times until I realised that in the headline, - "Groups" is a noun, not a verb - "Woo" is a verb, not Mr. Mfume's first name - "Back" is a verb, not an adjective Read it my way, it's fun!

These are astounding. Wait until I tell my parents that all that marching on Selma, and facing down the dogs wasn't because they were outraged by a system that systematically discriminated against a huge segment of our population..but was indeed because they were racist klan members.
