Why? Well, his congressman Ron Kind is the (cue menacing music) WRONG KIND. For starters, he pays for sex, but not soldiers (wmv). On top of that, he also voted to let illegal aliens burn the American flag (wmv). But worst of all? Because of him, we're dependent for oil on islamic fascists and nations that support terrorism. Elect Paul R Nelson, and he'll finish the job he started 23 years ago (wmv). Best. Smear ads. Ever. Wisconson? Since when is wisconson a hotbed of anti gay, anti-immigrant hysteria? I've seen those "Sex study" ads and in some of them they go into details "connecting probes to the genitals of teenage girls, and showing them pornography!" Pretty crazy. Still, this has to be the best worst campaign ad so far, done by the guy who directed "Scary movie" and it's sequels.

For me, the problem with these negative ads is not that it serves to alienate me from the process, it's that it makes me hate other Americans. Knowing that there are masses of fucktards out there that swallow this shit unflinchingly depresses me more than I can say.

The only thing worse than Ron Kind is Paul R. Nelson's voice. It sounds like a parody of what a politician sounds andlike. Isn't it great? I was actually doing a parody of him while some friends and I were watching it the first time and when he came on and sounded almost identical, well, it iced that fucking cake over. Don't think "meretriciousness" is the intended word Yeah... I went looking for a word in the thesaurus, because I couldn't think of one to describe the image-centric, content-lacking displays meant to instill feeling and avoid thought that are so prevalent in politics. I found meretriciousness and I liked it, so I used it. Stomach-churning was perhaps not the best choice, either, but hey, the post is already there, so there's not much I can do now. delmoi: Are you sure it's the same ad? Because it's kind of ripped off. Wisconsin is definately not a hotbed of anti-gay, anti-immigrant feeling, but the district he's running for (See "Why Paul Will Win" section) is the most republican in the state and he seems relatively incompetent, so he probably just decided to use tactics that some other republicans are using. Also, I didn't think it was possible, but you may have topped me with that ad, though it is missing the low-budget feel that give these that certain personal charm. Has anyone gotten to the Vote for ~~Pedro~~ Paul shirts yet? Or the radio ad wherein he accuses Ron Kind of twice trying to destroy the institution of marriage. I feel I should perhaps emphasize that I posted it because it's funny, not for any important political reasons. If it is upsetting you, I recommend ingesting your intoxicant of choice and re-viewing it. It is an unintentionally over-the-top paraody of what it intends to be and that is hilarious, regardless of who is doing it or what party they belong to. I'm sure there's a word for that, too. Anyone want to help me out?

Wisconsin is a bellwether state -- our state popular vote percentages are often very close to national popular vote percentages. We've gone blue in every election since '88, but just barely (5000 votes in 2000), and we elected Tommy Thompson as Governor four times. (How the man was ever considered Homeland Security or Vice Presidential material is beyond me. Great example of the Peter Principle.) And certainly we have other jackasses we've sent to Washington such as James Sensenbrenner. And despite the fact that we have Madison (Berkeley on the Lake) and send the only openly lesbian Congresswoman to Washington, Tammy Baldwin, we're still likely going to enact a ridiculous gay-marriage ban and for the first time since 1851, a state death penalty.

I'm represented by the fantastically anti-immigrant James Sensenbrenner who will (sadly) probably win re-election for the umpteenth time in November, but I'm also represented in the Senate by Russ Feingold, who was reelected by his biggest margin yet after voting against the Patriot Act. As for being anti-gay, well, if things go well on Election Day, we'll be the first state to reject a ban on gay marriage. On the same day, we'll also probably vote to reinstitute the death penalty after 150 years without it. I think the biggest mistake that people make in trying to understand the gap between liberal and conservative voters is that they look at it on a state-by-state basis. There are liberals in Texas and conservatives in New York (and probably more of each than people think). Wisconsin just happens to be split more closely between the two than other states, which is why you end up with wildly disparate elected officials like Feingold and Sensenbrenner.

I got my absentee ballot today and read the actual language for the first time, and it's quite far-reaching in terms of its effects on heterosexuals as well, I would think.
