What city influences where you live?

What city influences where you live? "The CommonCensus Map Project is a new, unique initiative to create the first map of the US that shows where people actually believe themselves to live. Up until now, maps have always been drawn with state, county and city borders determined by select politicians. What if you could see the borders that the people living within them would draw?"
You can participate in the project by contributing your own local area info. Oh, there is also a Common Consensus Sports Map as well. That one has NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and NCAA. Personally, not a sports fan. I came across it searching for this.

Also, it's interesting how Fort Worth casts a "Shadow" in Dallas' area.

Iowa city gets a chunk but Ames dosn't? Bullshit.

Pretty cool stuff, thanks for the post.
Be interesting to see how it develops-- as of now, the MLB map carries the caveat, in bold, "Important: this map is highly inaccurate".

*heh* Yeah, I think several of the maps carry the "highly inaccurate" moniker.

The total map has 41,412 respondents, and NYC has 2520 respondents. Which means if we go by their system, NYC really has 18 million, er, people who identify with it.

It's all about local television. If you live in BFE, you identify with whatever local television stations and news you receive.

WTF? The NHL map doesn't include Canada? That makes no sense at all.

I remember seeing this when it first started. I'm glad you reintroduced me to it, since it's gotten a lot more data since. All the random Fighting Irish islands have been overwhelmed.

Here in Southern Connecticut, the cable systems give you both Hartford and New York stations, just to cover all the bases. And allegiances are pretty split, in that Hartford's the closest big city, but New York's the best big city.
(And when I was growing up in NJ, we got both New York and Philly over-the-air. But we were too far from Philly to associate ourselves w/ them.)

They're still impressive if you look at the detailed stats though. They are a very close #2 in a lot of areas.

From the FAQ: So far, all of Alaska identifies with Anchorage, and all of Hawaii with Honolulu on the national scale. I'll put up maps for them once I start putting up the local area maps, after 100,000s of votes.
I hate getting left out.
