but it's still quite amusing and amazing at the same time. If only drivers could actually do this. The qashqai car games site has more.

Fun but totally unpossible. Anyone who's actually done that sort of thing on a motorcycle, skateboard, bicycle, etc know that you have to shift the weight to make it turn in mid-air like that.

However, perhaps in an old Morris Mini or Fiat 500...

"slightly digitally altered" is the Understatement of the Year.

For cg type work, it was pretty impressive. My first view was like "oh that's fake the lighting is all wrong" but after a couple plays that diminished and I was pretty impressed with the work. I looked at a bunch of other similar videos (I guess this is a new nissan SUV in europe and asia) and the video work is top notch.

"For cg type work, it was pretty impressive."

I disagree -- although for direct to web CG I guess it was decent. The car was too sharp -- it should have had more motion blur and less shine since there was so much distance (air, dust, etc...) between the cam and car. But I'm probably a snob. Some good 2D post would would have addressed the main quality issues. The 3D lighting was great and animation and modelling.

Also, It didn't look like the car was behaving 'realistically' in the video to me at all.

Fun but totally unpossible. Anyone who's actually done that sort of thing on a motorcycle, skateboard, bicycle, etc know that you have to shift the weight to make it turn in mid-air like that.

What we obviously need is a system of gyros, counterweights and attitude control jets. As the car approaches the transistion, the flywheel winds up in a direction opposite that of the desired turn. Just as the car hits the vert and just before it leaves the coping it releases the flywheel, sending the car into a rotation. The flywheel is intelligently stopped at a precise point to accomplish 180, 360, or 540 degree turns or more, and the counterweights and attitude jets fine tune the rotation, pitch and yaw for smooth landings.

With an agressive program advanced systems integration we should have these features available on a wide variety of cars in mere months. I predict the first McTwist in under two months.

In less than three months, the first systems modifier will have hacked digitally controlled solid butyl rubber-nitrous boosters and two days later they'll land the first frontside 1040. High frequency reedless pulsejets will enable the first backside 360 varial kickflip, but the driver/rider will get caught in the undercarriage and smeared out like a bug.

6 months later some tool will try to strap similarly modified motorcycles to his feet like inline skates, but thankfully he'll be beat down like the little bitch he is and sent rolling into a 200 ton hydraulic press.

Not just a viral ad, but one for a new SUV brand. Joy. (Warning, annoying flash site with loading screens every 2 seconds, very little in the way of payoff, and my biggest pet peeve: poor spelling.)

dhartung, I was going to give you grief when I realized that if such a car actually existed (particularly one with loquacious style modifications), Hammond would probably be first in line to try it.

And I'm sure that James May would find the whole thing distasteful.
