Oh, my goodness. *waves fan* I think I might be catching a case of the vapors.

Err, I mean that was some seriously ninja shit. God I love that game. I remember some game writer describing the first time he played it and he said something like "I cried. It was an emotional experience. This is how video games are supposed to be."

I've heard about this speed run but haven't seen the video. I've tried most of those shortcuts and all of the bugs. It just confirms my suspicions that there's no really good shortcuts through the final Bowser/fire world.

However, you could shave at least 10-20 seconds and as much as 30-45 seconds off that run. There's a handful of pretty major wall bonks, a couple of missed star grabs and a bit of slop in the tightness of the routing, plus Bowser can be tossed at a mine in one grab instead of two or three.

But then that's just evidence that this probably isn't a tool-assisted speed run, which is awesome.

Wow. Seconding waht loquacious said about the vapors. I think some of the jumps he did made made my heart beat a little faster. Of course, I have terrible hand-eye coordination and would never be able to make them if I tried, so that might have something to do with it. And even though I royally suck at platformers like this game (oh god, the Bowser worlds), I still love it. I'm actually about two-thirds of the way done with the DS version, and will probably download the 64 version on the Wii when I buy one. And if I could find my copy of the original N64 game, I'd try this run through myself. :>

Inspired by this video, I actually hooked up my old N64 tonight and tried the game out again. It's remarkably hard, way harder than the video makes it look. You can tell this game is one of the first ventures into a 3d platform game. The control is awkward, the camera is always looking the wrong way, and, the N64 controller's joystick is a piece of crap. All of these just make the video that much more impressive.

Completely unrelated, hooking it up (first time I've used my new Dell monitor's composite input) revealed a strange problem with the monitor. Now I'm sad.

Abso-freakin-loutely! Mario 64 really blew my mind when it came out, and I even made a few special trips to the local Toys-R-Us to play it. This game was a milestone for true 3D environment games.

Oh yeah, even today Mario 64 stands as one of the best 3D platformers. Why is it that so many later games totally fail at what Mario 64 did so well?

I don't know if it's ever been posted here before, but they make a business out of this kind of thing over at Speed Demos Archive, and some it is AWESOME. This one is probably my favorite, along with Mario 3 in ~8 minutes, but they've got some really esoteric stuff too. The other day, I let a download run overnight to get all of Half-Life 2 done in 1:42:18.

So, in conclusion, I am en enormous dork, but there's something in those time trial videos that can drag you back to the game, even years after you last played them.

Hey, I've got that monitor! I had a similiar problem when I hooked it up to my brother's xbox, did you try going to display settings (on the monitor) and changing wide mode to 4:3?

Yep, same buggy behavior, but with letterboxing on the sides too. The only mode that "works" is 1:1, which looks like this. (Too small to play from a few feet away...)

Bugger, hey. If it's any consolation the last time I had problems with a Dell monitor (about a month ago) the tech support guy arranged for a new one without even trying to troubleshoot and I had a new one and had sent the broken one back within a week all by delivery guys coming to my front door. No, I'm not a Dell shill, I was just very impressed!

This must be edited together, and that's fine really, since even taken as indivisual speed runs of levels, it's really impressive. Plus, the thought of someone practicing long and hard enough to play like that in one take... they must have been practicing nonstop since the game came out.
