I have to agree that the spanking photos are not the best part of this amazing site (I have many old photos around, framed, because of their peculiar beauty).
However, those spanking photos did give me an idea of how to fix the internet. posted by kingfisher, his musclebound cat at 7:14 AM on October 29, 2006
Wonderful, excellent FPP. God, that note. I should call my ex-girlfriend. Damn. posted by sidereal at 7:37 AM on October 29, 2006
That site and the Boat Lullabies blog are both really absorbing. Good stuff for a Sunday afternoon. Thanks! posted by patricio at 7:41 AM on October 29, 2006
Kinky. Guess 'The British Disease' isn't just for the British after all :) posted by kaemaril at 9:11 AM on October 29, 2006
That's so strange; they really look like my parents in the '60s; the glasses, the dresses. Including the interior decorations.
Not the spanking though. At least; as far as I know.
Interesting Buddha; your Iranian family shapshots, they look so familiar to me, a dutchman. Reminds me of Satrapi. posted by jouke at 9:14 AM on October 29, 2006
jouke: I think that's what I like so much about them. I was born and raised in the USA and those family photos have a universal quality about them. Doesn't matter where in the world you're from, most people with a certain amount of wealth lead more or less the same kinds of lives. posted by BuddhaInABucket at 9:42 AM on October 29, 2006
"Pretty innocent for modern standards"? Hmm, having read "Story of O", I'd say those pictures are really very innocent even for the standards of the day. Well, at least for French standards of the day, anyway... posted by Skeptic at 9:57 AM on October 29, 2006

Since when has spanking been a disease? British or otherwise?
Google lists all manner of things as the British disease -- hooliganism, binge drinking, snobbery -- but no sign of spanking. posted by PeterMcDermott at 11:54 AM on October 29, 2006

It's a figure of speech — and a fairly old one, from what I can tell. "English" seems to be associated with caning, and sadomasochism in general, in much the same joking way as "Greek" is associated with homosexuality and anal sex. posted by nebulawindphone at 12:31 PM on October 29, 2006

Ya know, I was at the flea market where Nick found these photos. I saw them befrore he did but took a pass on them. Normally I'd buy em in a heartbeat but they were in a boxlot that was really really moldy. I mean they stunk to all high heaven.
(note to self, next time just buy em) posted by Bighappyfunhouse at 4:46 AM on October 30, 2006
If you go by who's searching for what on Google, spanking is indeed a British thing. posted by CrunchyFrog at 5:26 AM on October 30, 2006
