While a lot of my friends didn't, I loved this movie. posted by Alex404 at 9:00 PM on October 30, 2006
Alex404, I have to say that that movie looked terrible.
And what the hell? Neil Gaiman-written with Crispin Glover as Grendel? Where do I sign up?! posted by BlackLeotardFront at 9:25 PM on October 30, 2006
BlackLeotardFront: Personally I'm got my doubts about the new movie. I like Ray Winstone for Beowulf, he seems like a good pick, but Angelena Jolie as the voice of Grendel's Mother? I dunno....
But Neil Gaiman as the screenwriter does make me a bit optimistic. posted by sotonohito at 9:53 PM on October 30, 2006
I think that IMDB page on the Gaiman flick is wrong. From what I've read elsewhere, Jolie is not the voice of Grendel's dam but some sort of evil witch queen who tempts Beowulf to turn from his heroic path. posted by papakwanz at 9:59 PM on October 30, 2006
'Monsters are getting more uppity too', said another. 'I heard where this guy, he killed this monster in this lake, no problem, stuck its arm up over the door-'
'Pour encourjay lays ortras,' said one of the listeners.
'Right, and you know what? Its mum come and complained. Its actual mum come right down to the hall next day and complained. Actually complained. That's the respect you get.'

The movie might be good. Robert Zemeckis is one of those 80s-blockbuster directors I haven't yet given up on, like I have with Spielberg and Landis and Lucas. posted by zardoz at 11:03 PM on October 30, 2006
And then there's the minormotion picture, one of the worst movie I have ever seen. posted by darkripper at 3:49 AM on October 31, 2006
The movie looks potentially kick-ass. Though I have to wonder whether it's going to be yet another CG-fest when I see actor credits as "Beowulf physique" and "Animated Image/Beowulf". Can you say "motion capture"?
Still...Crispin Glover as Grendel? Fuck yeah! posted by Thorzdad at 4:54 AM on October 31, 2006
Actually I'm pretty sure the entire movie is motion-capture CGI, just like this year's "Monster House". posted by hermitosis at 4:59 AM on October 31, 2006

All I need to know is Crispin Glover as Grendel. On my list. posted by hwestiii at 5:46 AM on October 31, 2006
The worst, crappiest, most boring, drudgery-filled class of my long academic career was the quarter we spent reading Beowulf in the original Old English. Goddamn, what a fucking waste of time.
That said, I cannot wait to see Crispin Glover as Grendel. That must rock. posted by MrMoonPie at 6:33 AM on October 31, 2006
It's an animated film, btw. A la Polar Express. I'm assuming that Grendel will look nothing like Crispin Glover. posted by papakwanz at 7:22 AM on October 31, 2006
Beowolf and Grendel was a pretty good film. It aimed to be more of the real story behind the myth type thing. posted by dobie at 9:36 AM on October 31, 2006
One of my favorite books. posted by mkhall at 11:34 AM on October 31, 2006
13th Warrior sucked. So did the book it was based on. Which wasn't really based on Beowulf or on Ibn Fadlan.
The original, though, preferably in Anglo-Saxon, is an amazing tale. Grendel is pretty good, too.

I spoke to Glover a few months ago; Grendel was the first question on my list. He was very enthusiastic about it, so here's hoping. posted by adipocere at 3:06 PM on October 31, 2006
More than Beowulf, the 13th Warrior movie remind me of an old D&D campaign I played when I was in high school. posted by darkripper at 5:26 PM on October 31, 2006
I really liked last year's Beowulf and Grendel as well. It meditated heavily on the fact that Grendel was, essentially, a terrorist (and he lived in a cave!). Now I'm wondering how next year's Beowulf will address that issue. posted by Kronoss at 5:55 PM on October 31, 2006
Poor Grendel's had an accident, so may you all.
John Gardner's novel Grendel kicks all kinds of ass. I've always wanted to film it. posted by neuron at 8:10 PM on October 31, 2006
