A distraction, it looks like.

Ah, Kerry, you magnificent fool.

Just wondering at the timing of his comments, and the GOP response. I was wondering why we should give this guys' comments any consideration since he's been pretty silent lately. Heck, I've heard more about Gore in the past 6 months than Kerry. Why is he dominating newswaves all of a sudden?
posted by shnoz-gobblin at 6:49 PM on October 31, 2006

Indeed. Kerry has allowed himself to be the October Surprise. Bad enough he ruined his own election campaign with his hamfisted attempts at playing the media. Now he has to go and try to ruin the 2006 Democractic Congressional Campaigns to.

Child Abusing Republicans? Who cares, the Democrats still hate the troops!

It's that damn liberal media.

"I'm sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won't take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes," he said. "It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who've never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did."
Nice 2-year-old rebuttal, there, Kerry.

he's an idiot ... that's why i didn't vote for him ... (or the OTHER idiot in chief)

the only reason he figures in the equation is because people are awfully damn desperate ...

But Kerry refused to relent, calling the criticism part of the "classic GOP playbook."

"I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed-suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq."

He further expressed disgust with "Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country."

Kerry added that President Bush and Vice President Cheney "owe our troops an apology" because they "misled America into war."

Bush and Cheney "have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it," the senator said.

The Democrats should lose next week. They don't seem to have a real strategy other than "we're not Bush!"

More importantly, it keeps the Republicians in FULL power as things dwindle outta control. They'll have no one to blame, but themselves come 2008.

If the Democrats get the House and/or Senate, they'll become the new whipping boys for everything that's gone wrong with this country and frankly, the Democrats don't seem smart to combat that.

I'd love to proven wrong about this, to see the Democrats get the House and/or Senate and make some meaningful changes.

And Kerry? Man up and be a statesman, if you can. We've got a enough senators and wanna be presidents. Shut and apologize and turn this potential negative into a positive.

A bad joke or misconstrued statement or an ill advised phrpasing and the GOP jumped all over it to announce that Kerry (a war hero) hated our troops...and that would sell to the American voters except for one thing: the Bushies can not babble very much about Iraq, the one huge issue they have going against them.
posted by Postroad at 7:03 PM on October 31, 2006

Just go away, Kerry. You aren't helping any. Just set down and shut up.

I'm convinced he's a tool to make the Republicans look good. After all, he was in Skull and Crossbones with W. He went to the same college, in the same club and you're telling me he's not somehow on their side?

You posted this story to MetaFilter because you think it doesn't merit attention? *scratches head*

There's a lot of stuff that gets front post news coverage and linked to Metafilter that I don't think merit's attention. This is just one of them. Much like sideburn guides and beedogs. But next time I'll post more on the beedogs side just for you. In the mean time, we have an election comming up that has very drastic possible outcomes for either side. I wonder why Kerry decided to enter the fray again, Especially after those Swift Boat guys finally quit following him to Blockbuster to bust on his choice of movies.

They've had FULL power for the better part of a decade now, and pick your debacle, that's never stopped them from trying. Blamestorming is about the only thing they're actually good at.

Doncha know the WMD debacle was "bad intelligence" from the CIA? And golly, things would be going swimmingly in Iraq if our troops weren't so demoralized (and the enemy so emboldened) by domestic critics and the liberal media not sharing the all the swell news. Abu Ghraib, hey -- a few bad apples, nothing more. The Katrina debacle, that was Ray Nagin's fault. Blanco's too. Those record setting deficits are due to 9/11! And 9/11 (of course) was Clinton's fault.

I call it "pin the blame on the donkey". I suspect that in just about a week, the GOP will be playing a new party game -- "musical chairs", a game of who's left without a seat when the music stops.

OK, I'll put it this way.

I AM interested in this election.
I AM interested in who will come out on top.
I AM interested in WHY John Kerry decided to stick his big fat nose back into a hornet's nest that he's already been stung from.
I Am interested in Metafilter's response to current events.

I'm not really interested in what Kerry has to say on the subject. He had his time to shine, and flopped like a grounded trouser trout.

If he didn't throw the 2004 election, he's past his Peter Princple Peak. If he'd run his boat like he runs his mouth, I'd never have heard of him. He'd just be some pictures and medals on his momma's wall.

Not a bad year overall. DeLay's out. Santorum is on the way out. Abramoff went down, and it looks like he'll be taking many others with him (I keep waiting for the Norquist perp walk). There's still a lot of gutter-cleaning to do, but we should all just be patient.

It's looking like the Republicans are going to get their 1994 handed back to them. Kerry soundbites, good ones or bad, are a 'comma.' If you don't believe me check back in about a week.

Two sides of the same game. Democrat. Republican. Don't make no difference. They're playing us, and this month we'll be singing, just like caged birds do.

Pooh-pooh the messenger and blithely dismiss his timing all you like, but I don't see anyone saying he isn't right about this stuff. And a Democrat showing a little backbone is better than no Democrats showing backbone, right? Which is what we've had since whassisface left office.

How many more Democrats saying this stuff do you need before you stop waving all this stuff off as a bunch of has-beens & never-wases talking out of their asses?

He apologized for garbling the punchline, but not for the sentiment behind it. And he stayed on the attack. Yes, it's two years too late for him, but if he can show some other candidate how to actually fight like a liberal, then it can only help his party get off the schneid two years from now.

This John Kerry would have gotten a lot more votes in aught-four, and I think he knows it, and is maybe trying to do what he can in the present tense. For that (and maybe only for that), yay him.

Anyone who thinks Kerry's remarks are going to make one bit of difference either way, in any precinct anywhere in the country on November 7, is a certifiable idiot. Quit whining. If this is enough to get your dander up, go find a candidate to phone-bank for.

If you're going to lose an election to George W. Bush without even having the decency to win the popular vote, then you're going to have to shut up afterward.

And besides, maybe if you'd have shown some balls two years ago, instead of letting the right wingers spooge you like an old sock EVERY FRIGGIN' DAY, we wouldn't be in this mess right now, John.

Frankly now that the media IS paying attention to what he's saying Kerry might as well stay in attack mode. Just as long as he watches what he's saying and makes sure he doesn't skip any words when trying to take a jab at the GOP -- "getting us stuck in a war in Iraq" is not almost as good as "getting stuck in a war in Iraq", for instance.

right about what? ... if you don't go to school you get "stuck in iraq"? ... it was a moronic statement ... it would have been moronic even if he'd said it right, because he went to the same damn college george did

and remember, he VOTED to authorize this mess, so he doesn't get to claim he's "right" ...

Bingo. If Democrats say nothing, they're weak pansy liberals. If they actually fight back, they're scary and angry. I saw if you damned either way, at least go out fighting.

The problem with giving the Republicans 2 more years of unchecked power is the possibility that they might do things so awful and wrongheaded that they can't be undone. The USA isn't immortal - poke it enough times or mismanage it badly enough and it'll die, just like innumerable major empires through history.
