High Security Fashion
Miguel Caballero is walking around his company's showroom in Bogotá, Colombia, holding a .38-caliber revolver. "You!" he says, pointing to German Gonzalez, a 20-something salesman who's been on the job for just two weeks. "You're next."
The latest in boardroom insanity? Nah, Miguel Caballero makes high fashion bulletproof clothes for presidents, state leaders and gangsta rappers and enjoys demonstrating how effective they are at stopping pistol fire at point blank range.

Its Armani-style combined with highly effective personal protection.

No, this isn't some cruel corporate hazing ritual.

Have you seen the bruises that cover half of the torso after a bullet has been "stopped" by something like this?

If it'll go through 3/8th inch plate metal at 75 yards, I'm betting that vest won't help much.

StickyCarpet, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read the article but they make no mention of massive bruising. The only think I can guess is that they pad the hell out of the guy under the jacket to minimize the bruising.

rough ashlar, that's true but that's why its specifically designed for small arms at close range. Show me any vest that'll stop a high velocity round.

eritain, that's right because I get a $.50 commission on every $850 jacket he sells because of this post to MeFi. So start buying, MeFites.

rough ashlar writes "If it'll go through 3/8th inch plate metal at 75 yards, I'm betting that vest won't help much."

I'm not even sure there's anything mil-spec that will stop a 308. Which is "kinda OK" because everyone's moved on to smaller calibers (.223 and variants) anyway.

The AK-47 still uses .30 caliber ammo. The current SAPI plates used by coalition forces in Iraq are rated to stop .308 (7.62 x 54 mm NATO) and other rounds such as:

    * 7.62 × 54mm lead core ball ammunition, Dragunov Sniper Rifle at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 54mm AP, Dragunov Sniper Rifle at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 51mm NATO ball ammunition at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 51mm AP M-61 at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 51mm Swiss Munitions AP (WC Core) at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 39mm mild steel core, AK-47 at 0 meters
    * 7.62 × 63mm AP at 0 meters
    * 5.56 × 45mm SS109/M855 at 0 meters
    * 5.56 × 45mm M193 ball at 0 meters
    * 5.45 × 39mm Russian ball at 0 meters
    * 12 gauge slug at 0 meters

That's for a Level IV standalone plate (i.e. doesn't need soft armor backing.) Soft armor alone without the plate versus the above rifle calibers? Swiss cheese.
