Not to poo-poo, because it never ceases to amaze me, but these pictures are truly everyday sights around here. The other day I saw a guy with a tricycle with a pool table on it. He could stop and fold down a couple of ingenious, retractable legs and voila, instant pool hall.

While backpacking in SE Asia, I saw plenty of that family-of-five-on-a-scooter mode of transportation. In fact, it's pretty much the norm.

I saw a tricycle yesterday carrying styrofoam to recycling -- I estimate the volume was maybe 60 cubic meters, I've seen big volumes on small bikes before, but this one was quite a sight. Here in China, everybody has their tires properly inflated -- these people mean business, no one is a casual rider and critical mass is business as usual. Also: and to think that auto makers want us to buy pickup trucks...

I have seen a few things on documentaries about those crazy ravines people have to cross to get to market/school, etc. A friend is calling shenenagins on the guy on the rope with a bike. Anyone know where i can get another example for my doubting friend??

Motorcycle accidents must be very messy in these places. Entire families, unhelmeted, shooting through the air with dozens of chickens and pigs and fish. The Polish one (guy on bike carrying six bottles of fortified wine) is not surprising.

PETA isn't big in Asia, needless to say. Chickens and pigs are packed together just as tightly in the US. You just don't typically see them being transported by scooter.

Damn! I would imagine its really, really hard to lane split on one of those bikes with the big loads on top. Or turn or do much of anything quickly. But I've gotta say I'm impressed by the creativity shown. I like the family of five on the motorcycle in the last photo. All it needs is a trailer for the kids and its a third world minivan!

I wish I'd had my camera yesterday. Just after logging off and heading home last night I walked out of my office to see a man with not just a refridgerator but: -a fridge -a washer -a dryer -a microwave -some other boxed large home appliance about the size of a washer under the pile all on his trike. Damn! I would imagine its really, really hard to lane split on one of those bikes with the big loads on top. Or turn or do much of anything quickly. But I've gotta say I'm impressed by the creativity shown. Seeing as how they lane split in city busses and semi-trucks, I don't see a problem there. People tend to move at a different pace here in Asia. So what if he's only going walking speed on the super-highway...
