Turn It On Again Tour announced - Banks, Collins and Rutherford tour again! Died and gone to heaven, I have! Never thought this would happen again in my lifetime. Phil, Tony and Mike haven't toured since pre-internet days.... Gosh, this is probably the very first announced (real) Genesis tour to ever hit the web...

One of the more interesting comments from Phil Collins was that his playing with "The Musical Box", a Genesis tribute band, was one of the things that led him to consider how much fun playing Genesis music was.

I'm absolutely certain that Genesis is touring COMPLETELY because they love the music! I'm certain that recent personal developments have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do for the inevitable three-digit ticket costs to see Phil Collins' speck from far away. Why else is Phil Collins so strenuous that this is NOT ABOUT THE MONEY? As the Great Phil once crooned, "So listen / listen to me / oh / you must believe me." I've been a big Genesis fan since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work.

I saw The Musical Box a few days ago (on their final tour, I should note), and wow are they great. Phenomenal show. I wish I could have seen the Genesis of SEBTP/Lamb. I did see Collins/Rutherford/Banks on the We Can't Dance tour when I was about 12, and I guess it was fine. Nowhere near as good as the 'Box.

I was vaguely hoping, a few days ago, that this might be an actual reunion of the original Genesis...I would have sincerely considered plopping down $65 to see them all do Supper's Ready one more time and to get to see Gabriel do the ending of Musical Box now that he's actually an old man...but they won't be doing that, will they?

I'm not saying this isn't a big deal - I'm sure it's a big deal to fans of post-1975 Genesis (or more specifically, post-1977). But for me, Genesis includes the young, kinda brilliant and impossibly pretentious Gabriel. (Hackett too, but they could just hire the guitarist from TMB if he's not available)

Part of the fun would be seeing the part of young, impossibly pretentious Gabriel played by old, wise Gabriel, of course.

That would be pretty much all of the fun, but great fun it would be.

Pretentious is the right word to describe Genesis when Peter Gabriel was front man, but he also made the band ambitious, theatric, and imaginative. If Queen didn't write "Bohemian Rhaposody" Genesis with Peter Gabriel just might have.

Pay no attention to the band lead by its former drummer.

Several years before Internet music sharing took off, my college roommate went to New York City and I begged him to bring back the "Musica" bootleg (a c. 1980 recording). If they could recapture themselves from this era or a bit before, it would be a fine tour. But there wouldn't seem to be much chance of that.

I saw 'Six of the Best' in Milton Keynes in 1982 when I was 16. Pissing rain all day long, a team of undertakers carried Peter Gabriel onto the stage in a coffin. The music was a blur but at the time felt fantastic. Steve Hackett came on for the encore and everyone went apeshit.

I can't imagine Phil being carried onto stage in a coffin. Perhaps a zimmer frame.

i mean, i haven't seen evidence of it, for all i know he's still playing along to nursery crimes

Nursery Cryme. Please.

I was walking in Stanley Park (Vancouver) last week and I saw this weird, big ass, scary looking plant. I was curious, so I actually took the time to phone the university botany department to ask them what it was. After I described it, the lady said, "Oh, that must be a giant hogweed!" And, as it turns out, it was.

And I would give my left testicle to see the five of them together again. I'm sure they all feel that the Foxtrot/Trespass/SEBTP/Lamb era is old news but I don't think I will ever find music that transports me to the Good Place as that did.

psmealey: That's pretty funny. Actually, I'm sure this is my jr. high school memory talking and it sounds dated as hell now, but I thought Abacab was a pretty decent album. Not that I'd actually buy tickets to go see these geezers play, but post Gabriel Genesis wasn't all bad. Were they?

No, they weren't. "Home By the Sea", "Domino", "Abacab", "Dodo/Lurker", "Me And Sarah Jane", "The Brazilian"... all songs from their pop period that were quite good, and even quite prog. And that's not even mentioning their great pre-pop-period albums -- A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering are damn good.

I never did get to see Genesis, and they're more-or-less my all-time favorite band, so I'll probably shell out the bucks for this tour. It depends on the setlist, but if they're playing any of the above songs plus the Old Medley, I'll be there.
