Lor, crikey, look at this! I thought "American Pie" suffered enough being covered by Madonna.

no, no, NOOOOOOO!!! Not my beloved Beach Boys! They didn't screw up my beloved Beach Boys tunes, did they?!?!? THEY DID!!! NOOOOOO!!!! They got "Catch a Wave," "Surfin' USA," and "409!" "409?!?!?!?" What the hell???? AND "Fun, Fun, Fun?" What's next, a defacement of "Don't Worry, Baby?" Or "Warmth of the Sun?" AAGH!

Now it's personal.

A lot of people don't know that when Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner" he only wrote the words. The melody is actually a traditional English drinking song called "Anacreon in Heaven". I wish I knew original lyrics. (Any of you Brits happen to know what they were?)

I really hate that song; I wish the US would change its national anthem. It was only picked in 1931. The third verse glorifies slavery, and the whole thing was written about the War of 1812, when we were fighting the evil British who of course would never become an ally.

"America the Beautiful" is a much better choice. It's original, it's beautiful with vivid images ("amber waves of grain"), it doesn't glorify a war with one of our closest friends, and slavery is never mentioned.

Jesus! Worship Jesus!
Have a yabba-dabba-do time

Those remade TV show themes are hilarious.

"America the Beautiful" has eight verses. Which ones should we use.

Is "aflatus" even a word?
posted by dagnyscott at 7:44 PM on January 31, 2001

"Aflatus" sounds like a gastrointestinal condition to me.

No, but "afflatus" is.

Steven: Google did (beware—MIDI for those of you unlucky enough to have failed to not install the plugin).

hey hey we're not monkeys is destined to become a classic.

I think I know what they're trying for. The lyric really blows, though. (Sorry, couldn't help myself):

af·fla·tus
Pronunciation: &-'flA-t&s, a-
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, act of blowing or breathing on, from afflare to blow on, from ad- + flare to blow : BLOW
Date: 1660
: a divine imparting of knowledge or power : INSPIRATION

From Merriam Webster Online Dictionary.

I couldn't stop singing "hey hey we're not monkeys" the other day. It's very catchy, regardless of how stupid the lyrics are.

Two words: HOLY SHIT!

One more word: terrible

another mention of the rules:

comments - self blog all you want. if it's too long, or you already covered it, or you dug up something to add to a discussion, link all you want. If it's pertinent, link it. If it's not, it'll be annoying and you'll get called out on it.

threads - don't self-blog, it means you're using metafilter as a guestbook for your own site.

This site can be summed up in this verse from their Bowdlerized "Cocaine":

If you want more of GodMight have to do what's oddNew Wine

I'm sad that they don't have a cover of "Naughty Girls Need Love Too."
