Ready for '08? Survey USA is. They've done polls in all 50 states, with sixty different match ups. You can only view one paring for free, mine showed Condi Rice beating Barak Obama with something like 462 to 76. However, a large community site wouldn't have too much trouble iterating through all the options, at least that's what they figured at myDD. Of course, most of this is just name-ID at this point.

This result may be more the result of name recognition than anything else. The less politically attuned might be thinking "Barak? That's that crazy guy from Kazakhstan, right?" Or "Obama? He's not related to that Bin Laden guy, is he?"

Edwards sweeps Gingrich 538-0

So far the Democrats are only ahead if the Republicans run Gingrich or the Democrats build a time machine.

This is all interesting in some way, but fairly silly. I can't envision any scenario where the democrats lose CA and NY, for example. it's just not going to happen in real life.

In fact, I have a hard time picturing it not coming down to OH and FL, just like the last two times. if the democrat wins one of those, s/he wins.

The crazy thing about McCain is how much he is loathed and absolutely hated by the wing-nuts. From my perspective, he's the ultimate Bush toadie, with a lil' patina of respectability due to his military service and the torture he endured. But seriously, go look up his name at LGF or Freep, or even a more (ahem) respectable place like NRO -- he's a small cut below Hillary Clinton in terms of contemptability from the right, due to the perception that he's "bi-partisan" in working with Dem politicians on occasion. Even with one of the most conservative voting records ever in the Senate.

I think it's truly bizarre myself, but I'm glad he's running if only to contribute to the bloodbath that will be the Republican nomination process for 2008. Brownback and (hopefully) Santorum attacking McCain and Giuliani for being homo-lovers, Frist attacking McCain for being too (lol) librul, etc.

It's gonna be fun.

mistermoore: No, it's not. Senators Akaka and Inouye and Representatives Abercrombie and Case are all Democrats.

And I see that Kerry won it in '04. Funny, my memory was totally the other way.

Note to self: before making random comments on MeFi, do at least some basic fact checking....Can I use "I'm at work and not American" as an excuse?

Thanks for the correction, anyway. DrJimmy said what I was trying to say, better.

You don't know what will happen once the campaign gets under way. Until then you can talk about name recognition all you want.

Nominating Hillary is at this point the only non-viable strategy the dem's have.

America is not ready for a female president, and certainly nowhere near ready for Hillary.

Of course, if Hillary DID get nominated, the Republicans could make all the history they wanted. They could run a black, a jew, an 18th century vampire, or a glass of milk, and run away with the election over Hillary.

Hillary has no support of any kind from the right, and only marginal support on the left. Her campaign will be dead before it starts. She should be satisfied being a multi-term senator from NY and retiring.

And for those interested, I identify as a strong liberal, and I like Hillary. But she simply has no chance, and I cannot bear to watch the Democratic party throw away another election.

My prediction: President Rudy in '08 by a modestly close popular vote but an electoral landslide, because he'll carry NY, TX, FL, and CA, getting him halfway there without very much effort. However, the big surprise will be pockets of blue in the heartland that have been missing for quite some time.

This is my favorite comment on Hillary so far.

This conservative obsession with Hillary is too intense and irrational to be anything other than a psycho-sexual manifestation of some deep conflict in the conservative unconscious mind.

Oh, if only she were the nominee. What fevered fantasies. The Matriarch they love to hate. The national mother figure, as strong as any man. An object to roil the conservative mind into a boiling cauldron of conflicted emotions. Hillary the Madonna, Hillary the witch, with mysterious magical powers. A natural vessel to receive the deeply suppressed anger the against a society inexorably abandoning traditional values. The conservative male ideal of the strong father and nurturing mother giving way to the powerful, liberated feminist woman. Evil feminists, the emasculators, the dominators -- deeply frightening, but somehow strangely alluring.

If only she were the nominee!

aa

P.S. Let the Cons continue their Hillary obsession -- encourage it -- and watch their heads explode when Barack gets the nomination.
