Susi Weaser (24) makes little one-minute gadget reviews and posts them on YouTube . The BBC must have liked them - because they hired her.

Good for her and all, but you're missing out that she was doing the reviews for the Shiny Media blog network, and she's been hired by independent TV company Princess Productions rather than the BBC itself. The overlap between blogs and low-budget media is way more interesting than crowbarring this into the rags-to-riches template.

Good point, cillit bang. I will concede that I missed the part about her being hired by a third party commisioned a show for the Beeb rather than directly by the BBC itself. I feel the "rags to riches" side of things kind of holds true for this story, though. I agree that the blurred/blurring lines between old and new media and blogging/MSM are much more far-reaching (and interesting) than this little story, but I think it's a neat story nonetheless and you can only cram so many themes in an FPP.

Not that I begrudge her her success, but it's obviously not as if she was doing this for fun and suddenly got a job offer. She was trying to break into the industry- just using a less traditional method than her friends.

I've been reading Shiny Shiny since around the time they launched (years? Who knows! Time doesn't exist on the internet!) and they've consistently produced some of the most readable British blogs that aren't focused around being particularly urban or hip (a lot of it would appeal to girls in the office that I work with, rather than my fellow interweb geeks). They weren't always Shiny Shiny media from what I remember, I think it started with one person and gradually branched out into a business. But that's the tale for most pro-bloggers. Anyway, I really like Catwalk Queen as well - even though they emphasise on UK-available clothes, they also cover the US side of the pond too. Love it.

Based on the reviews I just watched from this post, I wonder why they hired her. She didn't seem very personable, lively, interesting or knowledgeable. I mean, I wanted to like her, cause I like the romantic idea of someone beating the odds and making an unconventional rise to greater things, but why her? I found her lackluster reviews kinda boring. They seem more like ads than reviews, and for god's sake get a freakin tripod.
