Buy Syd Barrett's stuff! The estate of Syd Barrett is going up for auction on Wednesday. Some interesting items include several A4 note binders with Syd's handwritten notes, a pair of handpainted speaker boxes and a Pollock-esque handpainted stool.

The stuff isn't anywhere close to being as strange or exotic as some might expect. Unless of course they're holding back the "good" stuff from the public.

Most of this looks like the output of thirty years as a regular attender of the local Psychiatric Day Centre. I'd have been happy to bid on any baskets that were woven by Syd.

He must've spent a good bit of his time, at some point or other anyway, in making and painting tables and other furniture. There's a heap of it for sale. I find this one, and especially this one oddly beautiful and, well, terribly sad.

Is it just me, or have these auctioneers done the bare minimum for Syd's estate? 100 minimum, 500 estimate for everything? I mean, come on. The IKEA Billy shelves are the same as the kids' guitar or the handmade occupational therapy stuff?

I was hoping to see an elephant made of Alka-Seltzer! Dang! I'll settle for the hippo doorknob. I'm not really in the market for a grease stained La-Z-Boy recliner though. The various crappy carpentry projects, especially the pieces made taller with awful extensions are the best of the lot I think. The paintings should fetch the highest amount but if I had the room ability to not care about high shipping I'd be in on that table. The mountain bike is too new to be THAT bike, but it would have been amazing to have been the guy who sold it to him.

This (thanks for the link Afroblanco) is actually a pretty interesting little painting—it has the light you'd expect out of some sunny hills (and a shadow, too), but close up, it's completely abstract. Too bad I don't have a spare five hundred bucks. If it's even that—I don't understand this particular form of auction. Is the current bid a secret, or what?

Yeah, totally sad. I was sad when he died, then I got home way-too-late from work and read this. I kinda wish I was in a position to be purchasing stuff like this. I would gladly come home from work and flop into that sad, old recliner of his.
