I have always wanted a silo home. Every time I see pictures, I find myself filled with envy. After many discussions, it was determined that the coolest thing to do would be to build a small cabin on the top (really small, like 2 rooms) then invite people over. When they remark on how small your living space is, invite them to see the 'basement'

Also, it would be fully nifty to mount a big hydraulic lift in the main silo and use it as your garage.

I'll only buy if I get to have the ICBMs.

From the first link - Walk or Fly to Your EXTREME HOME!
Hmmm. Extreme. . . Home. Home. . . Extreme. Nope, not computing.

This is every house I ever wanted when I was eight years old.

I've been wondering about these things for a while.

They work for me (as a home) on a number of levels, but the main hindrance is that I'd have to "live" in a place like Minot North Dakota.

I can't begin to imagine how much it would cost to retrofit one of these silos. I've seen silo-conversion blogs before and it looks like filthy, dangerous work. That said, if I could have one of these installed downtown or at least reasonably near a metro area, well, it would be the consummation of my every industrial dream.

On preview, what rokusan and Relay said.

Yeah, and it's inevitably a looooooooooong walk to find another one.

It'd be really cool for awhile, aside from the Minot bit. I think I'd only be interested if I could open up the top silo door, otherwise the lack of sunlight would get to me after a while.

These’ll come in damn handy when the zombies attack.

I think North Dakota is beautiful. (Yes, I've been there, several times.) And I can get a silo home. Now if I can only convince the boss to let me work from home...

This thread was already great until I was given an opportunity to reminisce about Fallout.

Man. What a great game.

Also, I want a silo home.

A massive semi-submerged earth dome, an underground missile silo, a fucking nuclear submarine. I demanded all of these from my housing co-op. 'NO' they said [in rather deep tones], unpregnant singles get a damn studio. Like it or face the free market. 'Ok' I squeaked, little puddle growing beneath my feet.

I have some questions:

1) Is it subject to a HOA?

2) Do you need to turn two keys, more than arms length apart, at precisely the same time to get in.

If I ever get filthily rich, I know where that money's going!

Just imagine the joys of having a full refurbished missile silo! You can fit whatever your heart desires into one of those!

*excited*
