So my first thought on seeing this encyclopediac collection of links was 'I wish that there was somebody like realcountrymusic who could post a similar collection of classic white country gospel stuff'. I did try to search for a clip of the Louvin Brothers to illustrate this, but no such look. The best I could do was The Carter Family. Alternatively, you could have the Dresden Dolls butchering Satan is Real -- which I suspect might be preferable to Metafilter's atheist hipsters. ;) I do miss the posts of realcountrymusic.

I'm an atheist myself, and sometimes my rationalism blinds me, leading me to ignore the enormous amount of absolutely phenomenal art that people make as a consequence of their religious impulses. Any phenomena that can produce the kind of music that these clips link to has got to have something good going for it -- even if that fact eludes me a lot of the time.

I really enjoyed this, as I did y2karl's last post on cult music. Y2karl is obviously extremely knowledgeable about music (gospel or otherwise), has very expansive tastes and clearly put a lot of thought and effort into structuring this post. But, I hope this doesn't start a new meme on MeFi, where less talented people than y2k will start grouping some youtube videos together and submit them as a valid FPP. Might make sense to think up some new jargon to try to circumvent this sort of thing? Like, don't try to do a YTubeKarl, you're just not good at it. Just a thought.

This is delicious, y2karl! One year at a music festival, my husband and I poked our head into the "Gospel Tent" and didn't leave until the last choir was done. This music, when performed live, is a physical force. It's astonishingly powerful. I almost became a believer.

Omigod, you have *got* to get to 2:25 in the Dixie Hummingbirds "Our Prayer for Peace." They start singing about Kennedy's assassination at 1:35, but it kicks into the stratosphere at 2:25. Wow. Most of the clips come from various episodes of a syndicated 50s and 60s television show called TV Gospel Time, which was distributed via 16mm film prints, from which film prints, VHS and DVD copies have been made as the various technologies appeared. From the prices asked and examples posted to YouTube, these are very popular and are evidently considered extremely collectable. TV Gospel Time was hosted at one time by Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Upon review: Hardly suddenly, fff--and, actually, consider this is part of my MefiJob search. I'm in UR internets, researching yer Topix!!!111 and hoping the Lord will provide.
