I'm pretty sure even people who don't follow hip hop knew about this one. If you're gonna do newsfilter, at least do recent newsfilter.

From Wikipedia:

Although Winfrey's show is known for raising money through her public charity and the cars and gifts she gives away on TV are often donated by corporations in exchange for publicity, behind the scenes Winfrey personally donates more of her own money to charity than any other show business celebrity in America. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America's top 50 most generous philanthropists, having given an estimated $250 million. Despite being the 235th richest American in 2005, Winfrey was the 32nd most philanthropic. Her philanthropy includes girls' education in South Africa and a $10 million donation to Hurricane Katrina relief. Winfrey also put 100 black men through college with $7 million in scholarships.

Sounds like she's got a hate on for black folk, that's for sure.

Imagine that.
You write songs about how women exist solely for your sexual gratification, in which the word "bitch" effectively means "woman", in which violence against women is not only condoned but endorsed, and then you wonder why a female host of a talk-show for and about women has problems with you?
posted by nightchrome at 9:22 PM on December 5, 2006

And futhermore (I'm sorry Artw, you've got my back up for some reason), I think the tone of the headline is just a touch condescending. At no point does 50 say that Oprah's show is "insufficiently 'street'", but he does rather intelligently point out that he and Oprah are going after different demographics: "Oprah's audience is my audience's parents. So, I could care less about Oprah or her show."
posted by CRM114 at 9:22 PM on December 5, 2006

He says a little more than that. "Oprah started out with black women's views but has been catering to middle-aged white American women for so long that she's become one herself"

I beleive what he's saying there is that she's not "keeping it real" with the "homies" from the "hood".

there are some interesting rappers that oprah could have on her show, but he is not one of them.

not that any of his whining matters. i'm guessing the fifty billion or so people that worship the ground oprah walks on will care very little what this guy has to say.

Didn't know about it, and it was worth it for this sentence alone:

But, as 50 Cent said, Winfrey's purported disapproval might enhance a rap star's street cred.

That is a marvelous line. It even rhymes.

50 Cent: "I think that the violence that happened to Proof and the violence that's happening across America right now has nothing to do with hip-hop," he said. "It has something to do with the people — the state of them — and the music doesn't alter that."

Rap music might not be a cause of violence in America, but it certainly has some influence on misogyny and gun ownership.

Despite being the 235th richest American in 2005, Winfrey was the 32nd most philanthropic.

That is actually very impressive. Given the way income distribution graphs go, even for the very rich, the 32nd richest American probably has 5-10x more money than the 235th. Unless they are ranking based on a rate..

I saw "50 Cent" spray painted on a wall in a tiny, remote village in Syria.

Why the heck would anyone want to be "street" instead of the 235th richest, 32nd most philanthropic, a true original and valued by millions of people?

And I don't watch the show. Or any tv for that matter. So, some trash-man thinks she's not cool? Yeah. Okay.

(I did watch it sometimes, centuries ago when it was first on the air.)

Okay, in the first linked item, he says: "Oprah's audience is my audience's parents," the 29-year-old rapper said. "So, I could care less about Oprah or her show."

Didn't some idiot here on MeFi list Oprah as "one of the worst things America had given to the world" in a thread about the worst things America has given to th world? Oh Lordy. When was that?

Yes. I remember. I was her sole defender in that thread.

So. Where the hell were all of you Oprah lovers then?

Oh. And that $250 million dollars she gave away? I think the popular MeFi response was:

"It's, like, all hype, man... like, don't believe the hype..."

"I think she caters to older white women." ... "Oprah's audience is my audience's parents," the 29-year-old rapper said. "So, I could care less about Oprah or her show."

later, at the batcave...

... young people who listen to rap music are more prone to alcohol and drug use and aggressive behavior. But 50's not buying it. He points a finger at parents, who he thinks should explain to their children that his music is a form of entertainment, not a license to break the law.

I know which finger he's pointing.

Shooting my own street cred (hey did you know, The Massacre of Street Cred was going to be the title of 50c's debut, but he thought it was too long to be street enough, so he killed the last three words), I have to ask, why do you call him 'fiddy'?

It's making me confuse him with P. Diddy..Or the artist formerly known as P Diddy and whatever he calls himself now.

(The Massacre of Cred Street, on the other hand, is a little known horror movie from the 60's... ok, ok, I'll show myself out...)

Rich people are dangerous. They can do things, terrible things, and not even be suspected, much less accused.

Oprah is rich enough to have him killed, live on her television show, sitting on her couch, and not be indicted.

Playing with fire indeed.

Put another way, he better damn sure hope she ISN'T street, or else he's signed his own death warrant.
