Bill O'Reilly responds^YouTube to a 8 year old^YouTube (though he leaves out her saying "that idiot O'Reilly"). Bill and his "expert" Wendy Murphy (who claims that the ACLU supports child sex abuse) agree that the girl's performance is child abuse - "the ultimate inhumane treatment of a child". Murphy goes on to highlight the danger possibility of "some [religious] nut [who] wants to hunt this family down." The many comments at YouTube illustrate this point – while some are supportive, others call her a slut, and Tanzman6 (who has belonged to Right to Life and Peer Ministry clubs) says

"This little chink should shut the fuck up. We should have killed her parents in Viet Nam when we had the fucking chance. Burn the bitch."

While the child obviously had help with her material, is O'Reilly right that statements like "religion has caused the genocide of nations" is propaganda about which she understands nothing? Even after considering that she is Lakota (Sioux) and probably related to Greg Zephier, an American Indian Movement Leader? Looks like someone's already made up their mind. Who the fuck cares if she's related to Greg Zephier? I mean, I think the AIM is great and everything, but they're sure as hell not going to provide the child with a well-rounded perspective on things. I remember reading James Michener's Centenial when I was about 10. There is a scene where a variety of Native Americans are slaughtered by U.S. troops, including children. When asked why they killed the children, one soldiers replies "nits make lice." To this day, that is the only part of the book I remember because it upset me so much. Anyhow, the quote in the FPP made me think about that. I am sad that, in 2006, an adult would wish death on a child because of their beliefs or ethnicity. That said I'm seriously amazed at some of the stuff people consider "child abuse" There was a metafilter thread about a video where kids say the 'seven dirty words' followed by 'evolution' and people on metafilter were claiming that it constituted child abuse. It was surreal. There were people on metafilter who claimed that a 14 year old wasn't old enough to wonder around unaccompanied a few blocks on home in the thread about the teacher who ran over a group of siblings in the inner city. Again, completely crazy. Of course, in Bill O'Riley's mind thinking anything liberal would probably be considered insanity, and thus shooting the video would be driving this kid insane. But as we all know, that's absurd. Also, anyone who thinks this girl was dressed "suggestively" or "sexually" is a total pervert.

I think it's sad when parents encourage their kids to do this sort of thing. In the circles I travel in (conservative Catholics) you sometimes see it, and it always breaks my heart. That kind of precociousness (i.e., precociousness about political / religious / philosophical matters) is something that rarely if ever turns out well. Bright kids should direct their time and energy into learning math and science. Sound judgment in philosophy, politics and religion, just as Aristotle said, depends on having a wide range of experience of human affairs, which kids don't have yet. So what's the point of trotting them out to do these kinds of performances? It's creepy.

My impression was that the girl was more distantaly related (a niece or further) but part of a larger family group of activists involved with AIM. Given the amount of hate directed at the girl (at YouTube and at several right-wing sites) I think it would be irresponsible to track down her identity. As to people in this thread saying that she is not photogenic (and other places saying she is ugly), I think you have a severe caucasian bias. I found her quite cute and personable in her performance. And I'm sure she enjoyed making the outraged rant. I would guess her daily life is not a series of rants but she does occasionaly express strong opinions.

Whomever wrote the script for the original youTube video really should have held off on the vulgarities.... At least this gave something for everyone to get all worked up about. See my post for possible motivating factors. In other words, a shitstorm is good publicity. I'm actually impressed that somebody finally hijacked the Billo Express for completely unrelated purposes. Does anybody else get a distinct Mark Foley vibe every time O'Reilly starts going off on "Megan's Law" & child rape? What weird vibe could Falafel Man possibly give you?

She is a cute kid, and does understand what she's saying (or else her intonation would be all off). Sure, she probably was not raised in the most conservative or religious family, but kids are very politically aware, all the more so when politics directly effect their lives. When I was her age, my favorite comedy show was political satire, and just about the same time, I was arguing about communism with my friend. We were both influenced strongly by our parents (my mother is a Christian socialist, her father was giving her Ayn Rand to read), but our thoughts were our own.

So I post this story. Then haters immediately attack it indirectly by demanding that it must be removed and others attack me (the poster) or the little girl (and not her message). [maybe if the haters had attacked my writeup it would have had more meaning] Since then both of my YouTube links, The Coolest 8 Year Old In The World Talks About O'Reilly, and Bill O'Reilly takes on YouTube, rose to be the top 2 video links at Technorati. I am not claiming that I did this, just that I was part of a swell. At YouTube, I think there was a problem. The girl video had become so popular that they should have put it on some front pages but they seemed to have blocked it for a while (the video should have been in "top honors" but there was no was to see this). My guess is that the YouTube people saw this as an inflammatory video and wanted to hold off on main paging it until they had contacted the Bastard Fairies and got them to say that this is not the opinion of a real little girl. E.g. the rewritten header about the video is now:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT: THIS VIDEO FEATURES A TALENTED YOUNG ACTRESS PLAYING A FICTITIOUS CHARACTER. IT IS A COMMERCIAL FOR THE BAND 'THE BASTARD FAIRIES' AND DIRECTED BY AN AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILM MAKING TEAM.

Even so, that hasn't saved her from from racist remarks, harm or death threat, or calling her a (would be) prostitute in the comments at YouTube. The currently 11550 YouTube comments are here but they will tak a while to download.

Actually I don't think Duncan Black ever mentioned it at Atrios (Eschaton). In my blogosphere I first saw it 11/01 at DownWithTyranny!, but it made no splash. WaterTiger is most responsible for spreading the video. On 11/29 she blogged it. That day Firedog Lake picked it up and the next day it was at Jesus' General who eventually made 4 posts about it. WaterTiger has said that she was pimping the video in comments at Atrios (and probably at other places). Late 12/05 Bill O'Reilly responded, and TrueBlueCT (of MyLeftNutmeg) put his response on YouTube. Early morning 12/07 the General blogged the O'Reilly video and late that afternoon I posted this summary in the blue. At sometime on 12/09 the video had about 1000 comments at YouTube, but as I said above it seemed to be blocked from getting "honors". Then it was frontpaged with a new blurb, and by late the next day it had 5000 comments. Currently the video has 1,168,432 views and 11,951 comments. It is still mildly active - over the last 24 hours it has gained 110 comments, and technorati now lists 587 blog links (maybe 20 new ones over the last 24 hours). YouTube seems to be developing a referral-click-count mechanism but it doesn't work too well now. When (and if) they get that working they will be able to show which blogs are responsible for buzz, and maybe even how much buzz comes from IM and email (most teens I know mainly IM cool links to their friends). [Note: the above history is just my perspective. Anyone is welcome to go to technorati or elsewhere and tease out how the video's popularity spread.]
