Sounds like a typical hater-rant, but it's a pretty sobering read about the implications of all the DRM Microsoft has packed into its new OS. via

Furthermore, the malware authors, who are taking advantage of "content-protection" features, would be protected by the DMCA against any attempts to reverse-engineer or disable the content-protection "features" that they're abusing.

Ha! That is a lawsuit I would pay cash money to watch. A malware author claiming protection under the DCMA.

If Apple or Novell or some miscallenous OS vendor decides to design their latest system around securing content providers' intellectual property, customers are free to shrug their shoulders and go looking for something that matches what they want. The issue is that a lot of people either don't have a choice to run Windows, or don't feel or know they have a choice. If they really don't want to use Vista, they can either

  • stick with XP/Win2k and forego security updates

  • switch to Mac or Linux and forego years of legacy apps, the ability to access IE-only web sites, and all around compatability

    Many people with go with the first option. I've been using Linux for years and I'm happy with it, but compatibility is a real struggle. Vista promises to make it even more so. I don't mind people chosing Windows. I do mind being locked out of the internet because of decisions in Redmond.
