Groove, by the man who made Lotus Notes.I have played with this new app a little bit and it seems great. It's Napster and Icq in one with a whole lot more. This is what Ray Ozzie wanted to do right after he finished Lotus Notes.

We use Groove extensively in our web team. The IM feature is the killer part, but the virtual collaboration tools will come in handy once we start telecommuting.

Thanks, I had never heard of this one. I've been looking for the perfect I.M. client too (for my work). Jabber (.com too) looks pretty good, I also looked at Boomerand SST. We still use a combination of eproject.com and ICQ...

The more i play with Groove the more i like it. We use Icq Groupware at my work, but it's just to, well shit. If the server which groupware resides on is down you can forget instant messaging. This seems a much better product for instant messaging alone, plus all the other features, i'm impressed.

Icq has always caused problems on my pc. We'll see how groove does.

First there was Esther Dysan's syndicated column in December, then this month's Wired, and now MeFi. The hype level is certainly reaching a fevered pitch.

As a consummate early adopter, I've eagerly pursued these kinds of products only to be disapointed (fusionone, intranets.com, NetMeeting, and hell, even Napster).

I'll be interested to check it out. Any other favorite web "apps" out there that anyone's willing to mention?

napster's too simple, there's no quality control, and it's limited in scope.

i've quite happily replaced it with audiogalaxy for mp3 sharing, but groove looks like something much broader.

Groove looks cool, but I've *never* been able to invite another user to a chat session, etc. This is probably my fault, but on the other hand, AOL IM works flawlessly, but has fewer features. Oh well.

Napster's search sucks. Or is that just my client? Are there any clients that let me do boolean searches?

Where's that Mac client for Groove?

The interface blows, the software is slow and bloated as hell, there are all kinds of things that are horribly broken (invites, status and content synchronization, etc.) by design (peer-to-peer) and on the whole it's a big pain in the ass. And no, there is neither a Mac client nor (from what I can tell) will there ever be because the tool programming is not cross platform.

That having been said, it's pretty neat, and does a lot of things far better than anything else out there which wants to accomplish the same goals (shared workspace).
