Memorex hacked
Question. If you hack a site, is it really a good idea to leave behind your email address?

If you missed it, here's a mirror.

As far as leaving emails? These kids do it all the time. Check out the rest of the mirror and you'll find hundreds of mirrors with emails, Web sites and the like. While some may be smart enough to get into the tougher servers, that doesn't mean they have the common sense to wipe their trail clean or that showing off may lead to their arrest.

Memorex has evolved into merely a brand these days - they don't necessarily produce anything anymore, nor do I believe they sell anything on their site. They probably won't realize their site is down until third-hand news makes it through the pipeline.

Kinda cool seeing a hack in real-time. I don't think I've seen one live before. Thanks for the heads up!

Is this the first hack featuring a massive Flash animation? I was surprised to see Memorex was still around, even as a brand. I know I bought my 5 1/4" floppies from them years ago, so I did my part.

No....I've counted at least 50 defacements using Flash this year so far.

It looks like he left his email so he could ask for a job. The status bar message: "Lazy Admins...Your [sic] not doing your jobs...Please contact me so we can discuss security issues..."

I agree. I'm going to create a start-up that will provide usability consulting services to hackers. Any VC out there want to chip in $30MM?

Oh yeah, this is 2001, not 1999. Sorry.

About the email address, who is to say that it is even his? I could hack a website and say Dubya is responsible but that doesnt mean he really did it....

Yeah.. that's what I was thinking (in terms of him leaving his email..)

Yeah.. it really does show the attention payed to the site.. but.. *sigh*.. what can ya do..

Question: If you hack a site, shouldn't it be one people actually care about?

Maybe this is being faked by Memorex to raise awareness that, hey, yeah, they're still around. (Aren't they owned by Tandy now? I think they were for a while; I have some Memorex speakers that are obvious Minimus-7 clones.)

No. It's not being faked by Memorex unless the same "persona" is defacing other sites to build up to this one. I doubt it.

In regards to the comments about leaving email addresses on defacements - they're more often than not real email addresses. As it becomes easier and easier to a deface a Web site, stupid moron kids will do it and brag.

Hence the overwhelming stupidity in what appears to be an IRC interview with fredericksburg.com and said defacer of the Memorex site.

He can hack websites but he can't spell for crap.

Another fine testimonial for the Amerikan edjakayshunul cisstim.

Question: is the flash worth waiting for? I gave up after 10 or 15 minutes (over a T1!).

No, it's just animated aliases (I was going to say tags, but then I started worrying I was some old fogey using a bit of slang that's dead and was never used as I thought anyway... :-)

Uhhh... why has no one seen Memorex around lately? Anybody been to Best Buy in the last year or three? They sell all kinds of Memorex stuff.

Well, the Merorex site is down as of 12:30pm CST.

From the IRC interview [thanks bkdelong]:

x{AcE}x says: ur not trying to bust me now are ya
x{AcE}x says: lol
x{AcE}x says: i dont wanna go to jail
x{AcE}x says: lol'
x{AcE}x says: heh

I've got it narrowed down. I'm pretty sure that the culprit is either Beavis or Butthead.

My point was that I was surprised that he didn't message the admins *privately* rather than publicly displaying his address.

I've only known one hacker and he always liked to keep things on the dl. Seems like a more professional way to conduct oneself is all.

Isn't all Flash a defacement of one sort or another?

;-)

<chuckle>

You know what I'm wondering: has anyone yet done a website crack that was *subtle*?
