random question: why do some MP3 links spawn a Save dialog in Firefox, and others open the MP3 as a QuickTime file in the browser? does it have something to do with getting encoded with iTunes? if I didn't have the QuickTime browser plug-in would it break? (I think that's what used to happen before I finally relented and installed QT.) on topic, I always get Matmos and Momus confused. I think it's Matmos that I like... but this is fairly interesting stuff, a *lot* like The Blow. I do wish they split it up into tracks, however. Girl Talk is playing tonight at the Independent in SF. Should be fun. on preview: it never hurts to put the main link (the MP3) in the main body of the post. people are lazy, and so am i.

And Momus is a fairly well known musician, or so I thought. And I am not really sure how to describe the music - I wasn't familiar with any of the bands. Maybe Brian Eno meets ? mixed with mushrooms - set on a low simmer. Psychedelic minimalism?

Jeez I saw Momus and Kahimi Karie in Chicago back in the late 90s and damn if they weren't awesome - his wikipedia entry is worth a read, his contributes to the 'I Love Music' web community are good fun and his words/music strike a playful. thoughtful chord more often than not - give the poster a break. And heck, Momus has been blogging for a long time, I'm not surprised in the least he talked about the iPhone and included a fun mix. If you don't like it, move on. Best of the web indeed.

This is not just a crap post, but a missed opportunity. The original link was inscrutable, and its central message unclear. But as a result of the comments, I listened to some interesting music and learned something about an artist I hadn't heard of. What a disappointment the post itself was. It could have given the music, the journal, a bio, his homepage, and other sources that would have been instructive and enlightening. Why would that be at all interesting? In my opinion, the best posts assume intelligence and curiousity, but not prior familiarity. That's why I used the word 'shibboleth', above; it's juvenile to say "If you haven't heard of X, you're stupid/it's your fault". That doesn't stand to reason. I haven't heard of Momus, but that's because my listening doesn't focus on mixtapes and electronic music, it focuses on early American recorded music and traditional music, in which I'm really well versed. Would I call a MeFite stupid because they haven't heard of Joe Thompson? No -- and yet I guarantee you I could find a solid dozen, at least, who have. Should I say "it's your fault" to someone who doesn't know them? No -- I should assume they have knowledge in other areas, and that they might be interested in this area, if I take the trouble to explain what it is and why it might be interesting. Having higher standards for judgement isn't a bad thing. Here I am listening to this mix and enjoying it -- it is good! and the content, once found, is interesting! -- but it's pretty sad that the commenters had to provide all the context, trying to be heard above defensive, abusive comments from the OP.

Especially newsfilter about, say, Canada. It IS my fault if I don't know who Stephen Harper is, even though I'm an American. Momus has been famous since, what, the mid-'90s? His legal troubles with Wendy Carlos led to a commissioned song project that was both popular and well-covered in mainstream press. Further, his comment was "if you're too stupid to find the link," which, while blunt, wasn't regarding Momus's fame. It was in reference to the fact that you have to scroll down the page. If someone on Metafilter isn't familiar with scrolling down to find a link, yeah, I think that's their fault, not the poster's. Joe Thompson is a canard. (Yes, the post would have been better recieved if he included: "MP3 link halfway down," but that should be largely unnecessary.) You say that we should assume intelligence and curiousity. I'd say that the poster did, and it's those who were complaining about the "hard to find" meat of the post who were violating that assumption.

Oh for f*cks sake. This gets more and more stupid. Please Vronsky don't play the injured martyr. You were out of line as much as anyone. I appreciate your addressing the mean spiritedness shown towards him here, Klang. It's true that the standards that have been established on Metafilter for quality FPP's are sometimes used as an excuse for opening the field up to abuse and mean-spiritedness, but if you look at the first 9 posts you'll see this snow-balled pretty innocently. It was a simple misunderstanding on both sides. People were confused about a music post that went to a blog entry about the iPhone, which is 90% of the content above the fold btw (at 1400 x 1050), some even went as far as commenting on that innocently enough or being . But it was confusing, why would you expect to find the only link to the mp-3 as two words within the piece about the iphone, especially after Vronsky insisted: umm you could ignore the apple shit - the post is about the music - but thanks. I am not interested in reading fuck-all about the iphone at this point (talk about saturation...a 400 comment Mefi thread and not being able to take a piss w/o hearing someone else cream their pants about it), especially when we're (at least I am) interested in hearing some new great new music touted as "The Best thing ever posted on the web." Those are some mighty big words and at the very least it would've been easy enough for him/her to point out where it was, but instead we're berated with this defensive condescending shot across the bow: goddamn people - if you are too stupid to find the link - don't bother. At which point, I'm sorry, I'm not one to be so f*cking anal about FPP's being picture perfect, but WTF? How would you expect people to respond to that? As Miko pointed out, we all have our interests and areas of knowledge, and as far as I understand it, Metafilter is about using the web to open peoples eyes to new and worthwhile experiences, not to berate them for not being cool enough to own a Momus or a Joe Thompson (I don't know who he is) CD. That being said I enjoyed the mix, Vronsky, some of it is a little over indulgent, but it's mostly nicely eclectic and good. I'm looking forward to listening to it some more. Thx.

Too bad posts like this don't make it easier to expand that limited knowledge. Joe Thompson is a canard. Canard: an unfounded or false, deliberately misleading story; a rumor; a hoax. You might have meant 'red herring' or possibly 'straw man,' but Joe Thompson is not a canard, because he is an actual person, not a rumor or a misleading story. What I provided was a goodanalogy: a musician who is quite well known among people who are conversant with his genre, but not necessarily to everyone. As to 'you're too stupid to find the link', it wasn't clear that the post was about finding a link. It wasn't clear that there was anything but an entry about the iPhone on a guy's lj. It doesn't matter how long Momus has been around; there's no reason to assume he's as famous to everyone as he is to you. It's a big, big world. People have different frames of reference. That's why we try to present information to one another. Newsfilter, by its very nature, presents new information. That's what news is! Anyway, you two have fun defending each other. No amount of defense will make it a good post; the proof is that the discussion has been largely about post quality and not about content. The critiques of this post were very much justified, and I hope we don't see many more like this one.

klangklangston, i must strenuously disagree with you here. there are a million reasons why a reader of this site might not be familiar with momus, and to not supply more context borders on contemptuous. i'm familiar with momus, as are lots of people, but for a poster to presume that everyone or most metafilter readers (because the site isn't simply all about the "members") have a working familiarity with momus such that this post would be of interest to them (and it's not simply a post you can read or not read, but a freaking 83 mb multi-song mp3 that's not divided into tracks -- you're supposed to download and listen to that whole thing if you don't know momus or anything about his taste or significance?! whiskey tango foxtrot indeed!) you're treating momus as if he's as well-known as beck or something, and that's just simply not the case. also, it's music -- tastes, and interest level and therefore familiarity -- vary widely. neither you or the poster seem to be accounting for that.

Which still doesn't prove your point— That it is more remiss for the author to not provide context than it is for the audience to look for it. Not every link needs a wikipedia entry, and it's far more contemptuous of your audience to assume that it does, rather than assuming that interested people can investigate on their own. And by leading with the mp3, you make that more likely to get shut down. Hotlinking is considered uncouth by many. Look, you obviously got enough out of the post to enjoy it. Therefor, the post worked. That it could have been better is not in contention, but your post hoc justification of snarky bullshit assumes an audience so spoiled that their bleating is justified when not everything is spoonfed to them. And that most of the posts have been meta reflects the unfortunate descent of the poster into tit-for-tat, not the ultimate rightness of those complaints. Pretending otherwise is a canard.

I'll ignore the missing tape. I hear nothing more than a series of tracks of varying genre and quality. This music will do things to your brain. Good things. Sleep is good, if you need it. But I slept good last night, so, no, nothing 'good' was done to my brain. You may cream your jeans. At least you closed with the same hyperbole with which you opened. The post is indeed bad.
