A different kind of eco-challenge

mtvU and GE are sponsoring a contest among colleges to create sustainable energy projects. The finalists' projects range from campus-wide runoff reduction proposals to a public bicycle-based laptop charger for students. The winner receives a $25,000 grant to implement their project, which is unfortunately small potatoes compared to the millions of dollars required to, for example, convert an entire vehicle fleet to biodiesel. unrelated, previously.

16 billion in annual profits and GE comes up with a $25,000 grant. Well, it's hard to loosen up the purse strings when both hands are occupied scrabbling for something to hold on to while you're being dragged, kicking and screaming every inch of the way, towards taking responsibility for cleaning up the PCBs you dumped into the Hudson River for three decades. Apparently "ecomagination" involves dreaming up ways to rehabilitate your richly deserved image as an environmental despoiler without having to, you know, actually expend any real resources.

On the plus side I didn't dump cancer causing industrial waste into public waters vital to major population bases for thirty years so it sort of balances out.
