Seems like an odd attitude for a Japanese company to take... doesn't it? Isn't Japanese culture alot less prudish than the U.S.?

Sony's not taking steps to prevent porn from being released on BluRay; they're just not allowing their production house to press any blue movie on Blu Ray (har har).
I imagine if Sony has a DVD pressing plant that it does not accept orders unless they are below a rating and are certified by the MPAA or local equivalent.

Even Sony themselves had problems with the blu-ray format with PS3 production, so I'm not especially confident (not that I'm in a hurry to move beyond DVD yet, anyway).
But w/r/t porn, on the face of it one can dismiss the silliness of it all, but companies dismiss the business end at their peril. Porn was a huge force in the rise of home video, and without it the Internet and home computer industry would be but a baby. Even if you think you know how much people really like to wank, you will find yourself shocked over and over at how much people are wiling to spend and go through for it.

I dont see what the big fuss is all about. Not only is porn availble freely on the internet, sometimes at higher resolution than NTSC tv, its largely a cultural issue. Japan is notorious for their porn restrictions. You cannot buy regular porn there. All the interesting parts are blurred out. Sony, for all its faults, is a japanese company and doesnt want to produce these discs. Others can but Sony's own pressing houses wont.
Secondly, Xbox360s are not HDDVD players. You will need a separate add on for that. Its something like 200 dollars. Im not even sure if its out yet. The xbox itself is 300, so you'll be dropping 500 dollars to watch an hddvd with an xbox. Not exactly how the ps2 bundled dvd players.
Lastly, Sony has done a pretty good job getting some big names aboard its bluray format. When apple said they were going to use it, I thought the format war was over. I still think it is.

3) Blue Ray cost more to retool existing replication - It's easier to adjust existing replication for HD DVD
4) There are Blue Ray burners available for users now, not HD DVD.
5) Relatively speaking - they're identical (codec quality necessary to produce 2 hours of content.
Now, what you really want to know: WHAT PLAYER SHOULD I BUY?
Answer: Neither.
Look, both are about equal in quality, and all the studios (sans universal) are out for both. Blue ray is technically better (Better programming ability and larger size (and larger prototype sized) disks.
But here's what you'll buy:
PS3 (blue ray) or XBox 360 (HD DVD).
Why? Simple. The players are around $600; so are the video game consoles.

Blu-ray is considerably more troublesome to master at this stage, however it will likely become easier once the studios get their heads out their asses and delivery specs are standardized. Which will happen if/when blu-ray finally beats out HD DVD. (and should solidify my retirement with remastering of back-catalogues)

I honestly don't see these being a big deal at all, really. I mean there was a huge step up from VHS to DVD in terms of convenience, but a blue-ray disk is no more convenient then a DVD. The image quality is better, but the average person doesn't care about that as much tech nerds and audiophiles.

I won a 360 at our company holiday party this year, so I know which way I'm going... $200 for HD-DVD, woot! :)
Then again, I have OnDemand via my cable, and I'm not a big movie renter or buyer anyway, so I may not get anything. There's not a lot of HD content for OnDemand yet, but there will be.
I think the timing of this format war at the same time as cable companies and various online delivery methods are ramping up should make things very interesting; perhaps in areas of the country with widespread high-speed Internet, the physical media adoption will lag well behind the vast hinterlands that are still in dial-up hell.
