Is it a parody? That's the question on some bloggers' minds. Donnie Davies is a pastor for Love God's Way ministries, and he wants to Change Homosexuals into Ordinary People or C.H.O.P.S.

His credibility isn't strengthened by his Gay Bands page. Morrissey is questionable while bands like Wilco and Kansas are considered to definitely be dangerous.

Considier that Cyndi Lauper is listed under "safe music." The first time I went to a gay bar -- in 1984! -- it was the Midnight Sun in San Francisco with a video mash-up of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" including scenes of the witch from "Snow White."

This is a parody (that someone spent a lot of money on). But it's a spot-on parody. I mean damn, this is every worship song of the last 10 years. in musical style, not content. Yes, it all sounds like midtempo Toad The Wet Sprocket covers, boiled until flavorless and soulless. The Christian church really has turned its back on art.

Oh, the irony. The word choice was intentional. Our last choir director always wanted to do classic black gospel pieces, something our 99% white choir was completely incapable of doing. But he kept giving them these pieces, and they struggled through them. Miserable stuff. Kinda like Michael Bolton singing James Brown. The new choir director has a thing for early 20th century choral pieces and Timothy Dudley-Smith. The choir does quite all right with those.

Look at the video where Davies talks to the viewer. It's an obvious parody. This is a guy trying to look sincere by being phony but everything is a little over the top as the videomakers want you to understand that it's a sendup. Not convinced? Okay, check out the logo. Got it now? Consider the band's name, Evening Service. Enough evidence? A lot of work went into crafting each part of this joke. (Three websites! Yeah, I believe a webdesign company is back of this.)

Maybe not a joke joke, but I think they're more in on the joke than you might think. The lead singer is the editor of a Christian music magazine. He started it as a joke for some music festival, to start "the world's worst Christian rock band." Aside from him, it's some other band but wearing ski masks. Their first album was called Talking Ass. But this is all kind of hearsay. I'm having trouble finding very reliable info about them now. Anyway, AskMe seems to be a good place to look for counselors lately.

That is truly extremely brilliant. Especially the video update at the Love God's Way site. He seems always to be on the edge of bursting out laughing, but he holds it back and channels it into a kind of manic charisma. (And there's a bit of a surprise musical influence at the end of the update, too.)

I vote: PARODY. Have you seen Donnie Davies' latest video, Meth And Man Ass? He's absolutely a Borat; the song was written and performed last November by Paul Hipp, whose MySpace page makes it crystal clear that he is a parodist... and a very funny one at that. Paul Hipp seems to be a sort of country-and-western "Weird Al" Yankovic, and the only possible way that "Donnie Davies" is legit is that he's so stupid that he can't understand the lyrics to the songs he performs. But then again, he wouldn't be the first fundamentalist Christian to be parody-impared.
