That was really good... reminds me of oldschool rap before the days of "popping caps" and "hos and bitches" where they would just rap about how good they were compared to other MCs.

Wow, I was just listening to Vicious Battle Raps 10 minutes ago on the train into work. Awesome video work from the oftenmefiedRuben Fleischer posted by phirleh at 5:29 AM on January 26, 2007

Both those songs were so fabulous. He's got such good delivery. His lyrics are definitely a step up from most rappers, and his style is refreshingly unpretentious. But his content still doesn't really extend beyond "Rapping About Himself and His Friends."
The second video ("Hit Song") has amaaazing animation; I LOVE that style. Reminds me of this, only more fun and less preachy. Although at 3:29, his editors spelled "HOCKEY" wrong. Canadian, you say? Oops... posted by Milkman Dan at 6:29 AM on January 26, 2007
VBR I liked a lot. But in the chorus to Hit Song... 'Sentences'? Somebody need to be sitting that sucker down and educating him 'bout trochees, spondees, iams and anapests, yo. posted by RokkitNite at 6:33 AM on January 26, 2007
Let me warn the fanboys, though, that his earlier work does not quite live up to the promise of these (and newer) tracks. His skills have improved a lot since Flowtation Device, an album that, frankly, isn't worth the money. posted by rachelpapers at 7:09 AM on January 26, 2007

That track is like the hip hop equivalent of that drum 'n' bass drummer guy from a few days ago. Technically awesome, but bland. The boring subject matter (I'm good at rhyming!) isn't helped by the lack of interesting word choice... he just doesn't flip it enough. posted by rxrfrx at 8:53 AM on January 26, 2007
Enjoyable, unpretentious, fresh stuff. Great post, thanks. posted by facetious at 10:16 AM on January 26, 2007
His lyrics are definitely a step up from most rappers,
and most rap lyrics are a step-up from godawfully hideous mainstream rock and pop lyrics.
bland
exactly. This is pretty weak and cliched, and actually sounds like a step down from Clipse or a lot of other rappers. "Well-written" and "non-threatening" are not really same thing. posted by drjimmy11 at 11:31 AM on January 26, 2007
That was fantastic. Many thanks, hypersloth. As I type, I'm working on a completely legitimate acquisition of the MP3s. posted by EatTheWeak at 11:55 AM on January 26, 2007
I just pulled these oldies out for a listen just the other day. They go over well at parties. posted by juiceCake at 1:50 PM on January 26, 2007

drjimmy11, please provide a clip of Clipse as a step up from Abdominal. I've been surfing youtube, and I just dont see it (wamp wamp and funeral were not that great). posted by BrotherCaine at 4:33 PM on January 26, 2007
vicious battle raps has nice flow and actually had me looking forward to the next one. but hit song is anything but. it's actually pretty amazing that the talents involved in creating the awesome animations probably had to listen to $hit song over and over (and over and over)... posted by tu11ym0n at 11:05 PM on January 26, 2007
I wasn't able to find a video on Youtube/GVideo of Del doing "Phoney Phranchise," but that's exactly what this dude should be, and isn't.
You might recognize the walking shark and tiger from this awesome video.
