Superconducting power transmission cables In another thread, I mentioned that High-Tc power transmission cables were an example of an anticipated use of a technology which never came to fruition, and that the possible energy savings weren't worth the effort. Oops.

This is exciting. As far as I know, this is the first practical application of superconductors for any use. I wonder if the energy savings will really make it worth the infrastructure involved in keeping the lines in liquid nitrogen.

It was my impression that this would come into wide use if scientists were ever able to create true "room-temperature" superconductors.
