WHY? Is this sort of like a nice Swedish massage, for the cats? That's probably not too far off. I had a male cat that loved rough play, including the kind of patting the fluffy cat is getting (but a bit harder by the looks of it). We also used to scratch and rub really really hard, digging our fingers in and dragging him across the floor. This was particularly good when he was moulting. He liked soft petting and stuff too, pretty much any attention was good. Sadly he died of liver disease when we was eleven. I read in a journal article that cats have less sensitive pain receptors than humans, so some things that would be sore for us don't hurt them. I assume this is related.

Funny. My cat hates it when we touch his lower back. I would say that any way you touch a cat has sexual content for cat and human both. Cats flop down and roll over for us outdoors, rub themselves against us indoors--both are behaviors of female cats in heat. Pet a cat vigorously enough and they can get excited--excited enough that sometimes a threshold will be crossed and they will turn and scratch and bite. Spanking seems to bring this out faster for cats when they like to be spanked. But spanking isn't the onlyway to touch a cat that leads to cats gone wild. And for that matter, dogs love to be spanked, too. And it really gets them revved up when you do it.
